# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Henllys: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Henllys.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it happens and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

No single liquid but two: that's how many modern diesels around Henllys and Castell-y-bwch run, with diesel for the motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler for each tank.

Other vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both together under one flap.

Diesel goes in on every forecourt visit, again and again.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think which filler it needs.

That gap is where the error lives.

## Henllys: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

On a drive off Park Close before work, or in the car park outside Dorallt Inn heading home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar vehicles come next, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once started, carries on.

It's a few seconds, whether in Ty Canol or bang in the heart of Henllys.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Whether a Henllys forecourt or a drive over in Hollybush, take a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it lives when the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Cwmbran.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are around Torfaen — a routine to follow.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, engine off, and never rushed beside Forest View on the verge.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- The two behind a single flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel side stays closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and look again that your diesel cap never opened off.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Do not go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Henllys?

The short order of things, starting with not starting the engine.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment your ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

At a forecourt — Shell, Colley Motor Group or any other — the staff will usually help push your car clear, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Henllys.

Already run? Pull over when it is sensible, then turn off.

Henllys lies under 5 miles from the M4; on it, use the next junction.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Henllys makes a smaller job than heading under 5 miles to Newport — so say about how far it went.

## What happens when our engineers arrive in Henllys

By the local primary school, close to Fairwater Leisure Centre or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since those replies settle this work and the quote.

That price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is cleared.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. That is why it matters more.

The filter flushed or, where needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a test of your car.

After that we start it and make sure it runs properly before we go.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after we arrive, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## About Henllys itself

Henllys is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Torfaen, Wales, with a mix of detached housing and local amenities. Henllys sits near the city of Newport, approximately 4.5 miles away, and is close to nearby places such as Ty Canol and Coed Eva. ## Henllys and Torfaen: AdBlue drains across the area

As a residential suburb, Henllys has the same vans as nearby places — Coed Eva, Fairwater — all the way through NP postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Give a postcode that starts NP44 6, and the van gets there fastest.

Moving your car is not needed.

Draining takes place on the spot, whether a driveway, a road near Coed Eva & Hollybush Community Centre, or a lay-by on the way to Coed Meyrick-moel.

Guessing won't help at the back of Glen Llywd Scouts, close to a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down; phone and ask.

## The short version for Henllys people

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere in Torfaen, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — so leave the vehicle off then call 0333 366 0103.
