# Hey Houses: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave your motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before the engine runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Hey Houses.

Reading before the event? Then what follows explains why it happens and how to stop it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many current diesels on the roads about Hey Houses and Fairhaven carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

There's a filler on every tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

It's in the gap that the error happens.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hey Houses: how it occurs

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Heyhouses Lane before work, or in the car park outside The Water's Edge on the way home.

New-to-you vehicles come next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and after the pour begins, no part halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Hey Houses or out in Ansdell.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Higher Ballam or a forecourt around Hey Houses.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many motors show which goes in each filler right there.

- The handbook shows where it is when your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Ansdell & Fairhaven? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than once the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Lancashire that is.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, motor off, and never rushed beside Pilling Avenue on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.

- Both behind one flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel side is still closed before raising the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Hey Houses: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short list, then. First: your motor remains off.

Keep your ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on by itself runs the pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

The staff at Shell, Texaco or another forecourt will usually help pushing the vehicle clear when you ask.

If you are on your own driveway around Hey Houses, leave the vehicle where it sits.

Already started? Stop when it is sensible, then switch off.

Hey Houses lies under 3 miles from the M55; on it, use the first junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Preston, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Hey Houses.

## When we turn up in Hey Houses, what occurs?

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Clifton Primary School, near Blue Plaque : St. Annes War Memorial Hospital or on your own drive.

Our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run, because the replies decide the work and the price.

That price is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, once the tank is emptied.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and nothing clears out unaided, however long it is left.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Your engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs smoothly, all before our technicians leave.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run take roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
