# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in High Meadow: Why It Occurs

Keep your motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Around High Meadow, catching it before your engine turns usually leaves a drain and a thorough flush on the spot.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the reasons it takes place and the how to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads around High Meadow and West End carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two side by side behind one flap.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt call-out, again and again.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think which filler to use.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around High Meadow: how it occurs

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off High Meadow before work, or in the car park outside Market Tavern on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing stops the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes seconds, be it in Celynen or bang in the centre of High Meadow.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Chapel of Ease or a forecourt in High Meadow.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- On many vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Open the flap and look for a label — plenty of vehicles show which goes in each inlet right there.

- The handbook says where it lives when the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver knows. Check when you pick up a rental or fleet car — from Newbridge's car park, perhaps — not once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere around Caerphilly the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, engine off, and not rushed beside Newport Road at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have found your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and look once more — confirm the diesel cap stayed closed throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around High Meadow?

Brief order, then. Top of it: your engine remains unstarted.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Texaco or the Sainsbury's, ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump.

If you're on your own drive around High Meadow, leave the vehicle where it stands.

When the motor has been run by now, stop somewhere safe and turn it off.

Come off the M4 — under 10 miles out of High Meadow — at the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Newport, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across High Meadow.

## What takes place when we get there around High Meadow

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside the local primary school, near St Luke's Church or on your own driveway.

What liquid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since those answers set the work and quote.

The price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and then the car gets tested.

After that our technicians fire it up and check it runs properly before leaving.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run need about half an hour after our engineers arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.

Quickest of all: quote a NP11 5 postcode for our van.

Your car remains put.

The drain takes place on the spot, whether a driveway, a road by Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, or a layby towards Caetwmpyn Park.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Abercarn Library? By a county line? Asking is better than assuming, so phone.

## The short version for High Meadow people

Pour nothing till you've read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in Caerphilly, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave the car off and ring 0333 366 0103.
