# High Park: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and your ignition as well.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

The trouble starts once it's sucked through your lines — it will not burn, and it won't combine with diesel.

If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle stands in High Park.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around High Park

Things to do:

- Pocket the keys, which stops someone turning the electrics on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- Which fluid, and roughly how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers will know.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting PR9 7, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Never:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: the motor stays off.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start your pump.

- AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not thin it.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way along Heysham Road.

- Don't try to drain it yourself by the kerbside.

Get the attendants to help you roll the car away from the island if you're at a forecourt around High Park, whether it's the Shell or elsewhere.

At your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine.

Kept in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

The pickup takes fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Pool Hey overnight and has not turned since. The liquid sits at the base of your tank, undrawn — though it will be first through once your motor starts, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny passages and clog filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it's flushed out.

A car left standing around High Park with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water offers no lubrication, which is a separate form of damage.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol from the Esso.

Damage only comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and left in the tank, it does none.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid.

It does not burn, and so it cannot just be run through.

Deposits and corrosion stay after the following fill, and AdBlue separates back from the diesel, so thinning it can't help. Hence the flush counts so much, and trying the engine "to see" costs more here than almost any other mistake — in Southport or the centre of High Park alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Merseyside the car is sitting.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around High Park: how it ends up there

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars sits right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

The top-up gets hurried outside Bishop David Sheppard Church of England Primary School, because your dash lit up with a warning while the children were taken off.

Near Old Park Lane, someone pours a container in on the drive after work.

Another pattern: darkness, a pub car park by The Devonshire club, and a driver using that flap for the first time.

Rented cars, new vehicles, fleet vehicles, or the spare car in a home with one of each: the least known cars see it the most.

Leave it off: that is the first response to the same slip, wherever in High Park or the rest of Merseyside you are.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in High Park, and your engine started?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

It's been drawn through your filter and the fuel lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

You may see your engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Southport Old Links Golf Club or halfway across High Park.

No starting it again to test: pull over when safe, then turn it off.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the M58, under 10 miles from High Park, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That's why a hop across High Park to park beside The Gospel Hall and a drive of under 15 miles towards Preston are very distinct jobs.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Once the engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up.

If it is caught early, permanent damage is very rare.

## High Park: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped in High Park: a side street close to St Simon & St Jude with All Souls, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

What went in, roughly how much, plus whether your motor has turned over: we ask first, since those decide the work.

Then your tank is emptied where your car waits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

What remains from AdBlue will not wash away unaided, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters far more here than with petrol.

Fresh diesel goes in once the filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested.

Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming the system with fresh diesel comes last.

You head off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around High Park or in a bay by Meols Cop.

Before we go, our technicians confirm it's running smoothly with fresh diesel in.

Since the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

Afterwards, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

## About High Park itself

High Park is a suburban area located on the coast of Merseyside, with an elevation of around 8 metres above sea level. High Park sits near several neighbouring communities, including Blowick, Churchtown, and Marshside, and is approximately 13 miles from Preston. High Park is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, reflecting the typical residential architecture of the region. High Park is situated within the North West region, about 190 miles northwest of London.

## AdBlue drains across Merseyside, High Park included

Over the PR postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue call-outs in High Park serve much of Merseyside as well, Blowick, Churchtown and Marshside among them.

Assuming won't help by a border or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and ask.

Wherever the vehicle stands — your driveway at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — our engineers empty it there, and there's no need to take it to us; that suits High Park, a residential suburb, well.

## High Park: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one flat figure could be fair, since each job is different.

What moves the cost is, firstly, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Gymphobics.

That is why each call from High Park starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it's run.

Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

Before anyone heads out, you are told the price by phone. And payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## High Park: still alongside the car?

In that case, touch nothing — that's the best move available.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around High Park or anywhere in Merseyside.
