# High Spen: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause here for a moment if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Around High Spen, catching it before your motor runs normally means a drain and a full flush on the spot.

Not happened yet? Below, the page explains the why it takes place and the ways to avoid it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel goes to your motor — but plenty of current diesels seen around High Spen and Coalburns carry a second liquid too.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.

There's a filler on each tank.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both together behind one flap.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think which cap to use.

It is in that gap that the error lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in High Spen: how it happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Ramsay Street, or on the way home in the car park outside Bute Arms.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Hooker Gate or the middle of High Spen: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a High Spen forecourt or a driveway out in Victoria Garesfield, spend a couple of seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside the fuel flap: many motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Wylam? Ask whoever drove it last before you set off, rather than when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Tyne and Wear that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Hookergate Lane, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Stop when your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently through the built-in spout.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around High Spen?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the JET or the Esso, ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around High Spen.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

Come off the Central Motorway East — under 10 miles out of High Spen — at the first exit.

A short hop across High Spen is a smaller job than a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 10 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival around High Spen, and what takes place next

Anywhere your car has stopped, whether outside High Spen Primary School, beside St Patricks Church High Spen or at home, our van comes to it.

Those answers decide the work and our price, and so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and nothing washes out unaided, however long it is left.

After the filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel is added, and finally the vehicle is tested.

The engine is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians leave.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after we get there, as long as your motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
