# High Town: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause here for a moment if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

In High Town, finding it before your motor turns usually leaves a drain and a full flush where it stands.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Diesel feeds the motor — but plenty of modern diesels seen round High Town and Easthorpe carry another liquid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen around High Town?

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Halam Road before work, or in the car park outside Admiral Rodney on the way home.

Unfamiliar cars are second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company cars place their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

No part stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Southwell or the middle of High Town: it is the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these first, on a forecourt in High Town or a drive over in Normanton. Seconds, no more.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Fiskerton? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, not once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — wherever it is around Nottinghamshire — a routine to use.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Chatsworth Avenue.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never came off.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around High Town?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting your motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that's where your fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — BP, Gulf or any other — the staff will usually help push the car away, if you ask.

At home around High Town? Then the car stays where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

The next exit means where to come off when you are on the M1, under 15 miles from High Town.

A short hop across High Town is a smaller job than a run towards Nottingham, under 15 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## What occurs when our technicians arrive in High Town

Our van comes to the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Our Lady Of Victories, or outside Lowe's Wong Infant School.

Which liquid got in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because the answers decide both work and quote.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away by itself. Hence it matters more.

After your filter is cleaned — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel is added, and then the vehicle is tested.

Next our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs properly before leaving.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run need roughly half an hour after we arrive.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
