# High Town: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's where you begin if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

The trouble begins once it is pulled through the pump — it won't ignite, and it won't blend with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around High Town, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before the engine has run.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around High Town: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- So nobody can switch the ignition on, pull the keys away.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- Which fluid, and about what quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our technicians will see.

- The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting WS12 4, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Things not to do:

- No starting your motor — not briefly, not to reposition the vehicle.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, so it is wasted.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short distance down Queen Street.

- Draining your tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

The attendants working at any High Town forecourt — the Texaco included — will normally help pushing it clear if you ask.

If you're on your own drive, leave the car precisely where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Stored in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust to clean the gases.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It sinks, because it is denser than diesel, and settles down where the intake takes its supply from.

A vehicle topped up on a driveway in Hill Top yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the straightforward case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but when your motor turns, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

Once it is drawn in, the damage takes two forms.

It attacks some metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches till it is removed completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels.

By daybreak, a vehicle sitting in High Town with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; if it is just inside the tank, it doesn't.

The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol from the Esso.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's inside that tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It does not burn, so it can't just be run through.

It does not stay mixed, so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Church Hill or the middle of High Town.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Wherever around Staffordshire your vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue yet inside the reservoir: the easiest part of any fuel system to clear.

## High Town: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, now and then behind a single flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light.

A container picked up while heading home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the typical route.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

The refill gets hurried outside Poppyfield Primary Academy, because your dash lit up with a warning while the kids were dropped off.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Belt Road.

Another pattern: darkness, the car park by The Bridge Inn, and a driver using that flap the first time.

The least familiar vehicles see it the most — rentals, new ones, fleet cars, and the spare vehicle of a family with one of each fuels.

Same mistake, an identical first response — keep it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around High Town or the remainder of Staffordshire.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around High Town?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

The filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and any running time carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each may show up, perhaps part way across High Town or coming back from Skelly.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the M6 Toll, under 3 miles from High Town, at the first junction and stop safely, rather than driving on.

Mileage counts: every mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, and so heading for Lichfield, under 10 miles away, makes a much bigger job than hopping across High Town to the car park by St Chad.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to flush once your engine has been started, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has come to a stop.

When it is spotted early, long-term damage is very unusual.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around High Town: what it takes

Wherever it has come to rest around High Town — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a road beside Trinity Church — our van comes to your vehicle.

Before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if the engine has been run, because those replies decide this work.

Then your tank is drained where the vehicle sits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

What remains from AdBlue won't flush away by itself, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters far more with urea than with petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Engine not run? In that case count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

New diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that's the final step.

Whether it is a parking bay at Hednesford or a drive around High Town, that is where we fire it up and you set off.

It is checked on fresh diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our engineers leave.

The entire job is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

At the end, there is paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

High Town sits at an elevation of 172 metres, close to the nearby settlements of West Hill, Hednesford, and Chadsmoor. High Town is located near the city of Lichfield, which is approximately 7.8 miles away, and is part of the wider West Midlands region. High Town has a population of around 5460 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Staffordshire, High Town included

AdBlue call-outs around High Town go to teams that serve the towns around it — West Hill, Hednesford as well as Chadsmoor — and much of Staffordshire further out, throughout WS postcodes.

Guessing won't help by a county line or anywhere hard to describe; ring and check.

High Town is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it is, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around High Town

There's no fair single quote, because the jobs are not the same.

What changes the price is, firstly, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Chadsmoor Methodist Church.

For that in mind, every enquiry from High Town opens with the same trio — what went in, how much, if it ran — ahead of any quote.

Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

Our price is given during the call, before anyone leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your insurance while we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

## Next to the vehicle around High Town, still?

Then, touch nothing — that is the best move there is.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it ran is all our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest throughout Staffordshire, High Town too.
