# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Higham: Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, keep your ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your motor hasn't turned, it is drained and fully rinsed where your vehicle is around Higham.

The remainder of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels on the roads around Higham and Padiham carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler on every tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## Higham: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Sabden Road, or heading home in the car park at The Four Alls.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is a second thing: an unfamiliar car.

Nothing stops the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Fence or the middle of Higham, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Waterside or a forecourt around Higham.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many cars mark which goes in each filler just there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Brierfield? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Lancashire that is.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine off, and not in a rush beside Chapel Street at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Both under a single flap? So make sure the cap on your diesel side stays closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Stop once your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip slowly using the built-in spout.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — confirm the diesel filler remained shut throughout. After that, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Higham?

Brief order, then. First: your motor remains unstarted.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where your fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Valero, Texaco or another — the attendants will usually help push your car clear, if you ask.

Your own drive around Higham is where it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Come off the M65 — under 3 miles out of Higham — at the first junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Preston, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Higham.

## Higham: what happens when our engineers arrive

The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near The Pinfold, or outside Higham St John's Church of England Primary School.

Those answers settle this work and our price, and so we ask what went in, about how much, and if it has run.

You get that price by phone, before anybody heads out.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, certain metals corrode, and none of it clears away on its own, however long it sits.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
