# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Highbridge

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Highbridge.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels around Huntspill, like those in Highbridge, carry on two liquids; the engine takes only the diesel.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to fresh them, from a separate tank.

There is a filler on each tank.

Many of vehicles share a single flap for the two, while some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on every forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Far less often, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It is in the gap that the slip happens.

## Highbridge: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things lining up together.

On a driveway off Church Street before work, or in the car park outside Coopers Arms heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar cars are next, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It takes a few seconds, whether out in Alstone or bang in the heart of Highbridge.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these first, at a forecourt in Highbridge or a drive over in Hackness. A few seconds, that's all.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it lives when the filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Highbridge & Burnham, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever around Somerset the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Poplar Estate.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Highbridge?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at Asda, Bunscome Garage or another forecourt will usually help pushing your car away when you ask.

If you're on your own drive around Highbridge, leave the car where it stands.

When the motor has run already, stop safely then turn the car off.

The next exit is where to come off if you're on the M5, under a mile from Highbridge.

A short hop across Highbridge is a smaller job than a run towards Wells, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when we get there around Highbridge

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Churchfield Church School, close to St John the Evangelist or on your own drive.

Which fluid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask since those answers decide both work and price.

Nobody heads out before you have had the quote by phone.

Draining that tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Next our engineers start the car and confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## Highbridge and Somerset: AdBlue drains across the area

Over TA postcodes, the teams that cover Highbridge — a coastal village — work the surrounding places too, Edithmead and Walrow among them.

A postcode starting TA9 3 gets our van to you fastest.

The car doesn't need to shift.

Draining takes place right there, be it a drive, a street near Oak Tree Arena, or a lay-by on the way to Apex Park.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Our Lady and the English Martyrs? Close to a county line? Checking beats guessing, and so ring.

## For Highbridge motorists, the short version

First, the cap; then, the tip.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave the car off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere in Somerset.
