# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Higher Ince? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and your ignition as well.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in.

If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly cleaned where your car stands in Higher Ince.

Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Higher Ince, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

- Take the keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.

- If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- Which product, and about how much volume? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our technicians can see.

- The van locates you quickest with a postcode starting WN2 2, or simply the name of a street close by, so call from the spot.

Do not do these:

- Shifting your car even a few yards is no reason to start the engine.

- Switching your key to ignition alone sets your pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.

- Adding extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Keep the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance down Manchester Road.

- Draining your tank yourself beside the road is not one to try.

Rolling your vehicle off the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Higher Ince forecourt you're on, the BP or any other.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, where it cleans the fumes.

Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

It doesn't combine. Once it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Scholes last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the base of that tank, undrawn — though it will be first through once the engine starts, before any diesel at all.

Once it is drawn in, the damage takes two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the components it gets to for as long as it remains there.

Lines carrying AdBlue mean harm by morning for a car parked around Higher Ince. Just in that tank, it stays stable.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Tesco and you have a fault of thin fuel.

No damage is done as long as it stays unused, mixed into your diesel — only when the motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Lower Ince or the middle of Higher Ince.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever across Greater Manchester your car has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest bit of a fuel system to clear.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Higher Ince

It's not deliberate. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind one flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light.

Usually it's not the forecourt: someone picks up a container driving home and pours it in outside the house.

Usually, it happens in one of a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Ince CofE Primary School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Ince Green Lane.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at The Squirrel, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

The least known cars see it most — hire cars, new cars, fleet ones, and the other motor of a home with one of each fuel types.

Keep it off: that is the first response to an identical slip, anywhere around Higher Ince or the rest of Greater Manchester you happen to be.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Higher Ince?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

Via your filter, along the lines, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

Maybe coming back from Canal Terrace, or part way across Higher Ince, your engine might run lumpy, smoke, drop power, light up the dash or cut out.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Leave it off instead of restarting it to check.

Every start pulls more of that through.

Leave the Bryn Spur, under 3 miles from Higher Ince, at the first junction and stop safely, rather than carrying on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system. That is why crossing Higher Ince to park beside Smithy Green Precinct and a drive of under 15 miles for Salford are such distinct jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop.

Permanent damage is very uncommon if it's caught early.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Higher Ince: what it takes

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Higher Ince: a side street near Ince Clinic & Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three replies shape the job, and so before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, about what quantity, and if the engine has turned over.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one.

The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Clean diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then your car is tested.

About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when your engine has not run.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

The last step is to bleed your system on new diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, outside Ince or on a driveway in Higher Ince.

The test before our technicians head off is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

Our technicians do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never needs to go to a workshop.

Afterwards, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Higher Ince

Each job is different, so no fixed quote is fair.

Three things move the price: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight spot behind Ince Independent Methodist Church.

That's why each call from Higher Ince starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it's run.

When those are answered, a range turns into a single firm number.

Before anyone heads out, you are told the quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is on the way, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
