# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Highfield? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your motor.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage only starts when the pump begins pulling it.

Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Highfield.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Highfield

Things to do:

- Pocket your keys, and that prevents anyone switching the power on.

- Put the hazards on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, and so do not bin it away.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting S2 4, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Never:

- Shifting your vehicle even a short way is no reason to start your engine.

- Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start your fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short distance along Cherry Street.

- Draining your tank yourself by the road is not worth trying.

The staff on duty at any Highfield filling station — the BP among them — will usually help pushing it aside if you ask.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains exactly as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to treat the gases.

Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

When your system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Until then it sits beneath your diesel, and that is how a vehicle filled in Sharrow Head yesterday and not switched on remains the straightforward case, provided no one touches the key.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny channels; meanwhile, because it eats at certain metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays inside.

By daybreak, a vehicle sitting around Highfield with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it is only in your tank, it doesn't.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, so the water content damages them by itself.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Mixed into the diesel and left unused, it's harmless at that stage; running the motor is the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one.

It can't simply be run through, since it does not burn.

It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Sharrow or the middle of Highfield.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

Anywhere across South Yorkshire your car has stopped, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the simplest part of a fuel system to empty.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Highfield

It's not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light.

It mostly occurs outside the house, from a container bought on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Lowfield Community Primary School the top-up is rushed.

Near Shoreham Street, a driver tips a bottle in at home in the evening.

One more version: dim light, a pub car park outside The Railway Hotel, and a driver using that flap for the first time.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a new motor, a fleet car, or the other vehicle in a home with both fuel types — the cars people know the least.

Anywhere around South Yorkshire, Highfield as well, the slip does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Highfield, and your engine started?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

It has been sucked through your filter and your lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Lowfield Park or halfway across Highfield.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check.

Every start pulls more of that through.

Highfield sits under 5 miles from the M1; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and stop safely instead of carrying on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Highfield to the car park by Derek Dooley MBE is a very different job from a run towards Sheffield, under a mile away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Our technicians do all of the rinsing where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the engine has been run there is more of it.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it is noticed early.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Highfield: what it takes

A street beside Joe Shaw, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: wherever the vehicle has come to rest in Highfield, we come to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has been run, because those answers decide the work.

Then that tank is cleared where the vehicle stands, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is flushed all the way through since what remains won't wash away by itself.

Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that your car is tested.

Not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Finally, the fuel system is bled with clean diesel.

Starting the car comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, at Sheffield or on a driveway around Highfield.

It's checked on clean diesel to be sure it runs correctly before we head off.

Our engineers do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

## About Highfield and where it is

Highfield is a suburban area located on the riverside in South Yorkshire, with a mix of terraced housing and a population of around 11837 residents. Highfield sits at an elevation of 74 metres, close to the city centre of Sheffield, which is approximately 0.9 miles away. Highfield is near other local places such as Lowfield, Little Sheffield, and Heeley, and is part of the larger Sheffield urban area. Highfield is situated in a region with a strong industrial heritage, near the confluence of several major rivers.

## AdBlue drains around Highfield and across South Yorkshire

AdBlue jobs around Highfield are passed to teams that serve the towns near it — Lowfield, Little Sheffield plus Heeley — and most of South Yorkshire beyond, throughout S postcodes.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than guessing.

A van that comes to you suits Highfield, a residential suburb: you have no need to take the car to us, because we drain it on the spot, in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Highfield

Each job is different, and so no single quote is fair.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of the car, since an open drive is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight space behind Legends of the Lane.

For that in mind, every call from Highfield opens by asking the same trio — what went in, how much, if it ran — before a quote.

Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## Highfield: still next to your car?

Right now, the best thing to do with the car is to not touch it.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, in Highfield or anywhere within South Yorkshire, after you ring 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and if the engine ran.
