# Highfield: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Highfield.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of current diesels on the roads round Highfield and Rhosrhedyn carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Plenty of motors share a single flap for both, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think what filler to use.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## Highfield: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Highfield Road, or on the way home in the car park outside Beech Avenue Brewery.

New-to-you cars are second, too. Rentals, new cars and company cars put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

No part stops the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Little Mountain or the middle of Highfield, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Highfield forecourt or a driveway out in New Broughton, spend a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — many motors mark what goes in which inlet right there.

- Can't find it next to the diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says where.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask as you collect a hire car or fleet car — from Gwersyllt's car park, perhaps — not when the warning comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — wherever it is across Wrexham — a routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Poolmouth Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, but it works.

- The two under one flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel side is still shut ahead of raising the bottle.

- Stop once the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour slowly using its built-in spout.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Highfield: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Brief order, then. First: your engine stays unstarted.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Sainsbury's, Shell or another forecourt will normally help pushing the vehicle clear if you ask.

If you are on your own drive in Highfield, leave it where it stands.

When your engine has run by now, stop somewhere safe and turn the car off.

On the M53, under 15 miles from Highfield, that means the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Wrexham, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Highfield.

## When we arrive around Highfield, what occurs?

The van reaches your car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, near Lex F.C. Stansty Park, or by the local primary school.

What liquid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask since the replies set the work and quote.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is emptied.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains across Wrexham, Highfield included

Highfield is a rural hamlet, and our vans that cover it also work the places around it, Gatewen and Pentre Broughton among them, across the LL postcode area.

The van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting LL11 4.

There's no need to shift the vehicle.

Draining takes place on the spot, be it a drive, a road by Wheatsheaf English Congregational Church, or a lay-by towards Ashfield Playing Field.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Rhosddu Methodist Church, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## For Highfield motorists, the short version

Tip nothing until you have read the cap.

Even so AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel will drain it where it stands, wherever around Wrexham: keep it off then call 0333 366 0103.
