# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Highfields: Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page aside a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

In Highfields, catching it before your engine turns usually means a drain and a full flush where it stands.

Not happened yet? Below, the page explains the why it happens and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many modern diesels in Castlefields, as well as Highfields, run on two fluids; the motor gets just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two together behind one flap.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

It is in that gap that the error happens.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Highfields: how it takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and running out means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Hillcrest, perhaps outside Hickory's Smokehouse on the way home after work.

Unfamiliar motors come second, too. Rentals, new motors and company motors put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

Third, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as readily, and once the pour starts, no part stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Highfields or out in Rowley Park.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Rising Brook or a forecourt in Highfields.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- On many motors, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside your diesel inlet? Then check beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say where.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Stafford, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Staffordshire that is.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Lovelace Close.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then look once more — making sure your diesel cap stayed shut throughout. Only then, start your car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Highfields: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your engine.

Leave the ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself starts the pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the pump if you're at a forecourt — the the nearest petrol station, the Esso or anywhere else.

If you are on your own driveway around Highfields, leave it where it sits.

Already started? Stop when it is sensible, then turn off.

Highfields sits under a mile from the M6; on it, use the next junction.

A short hop across Highfields is a smaller job than a run towards Wolverhampton, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Highfields, and what happens next

The van comes to your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Castle Church Hall, or outside Blessed Mother Teresa's Catholic Primary School.

Those answers settle the work and our price, and so we ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

During the phone call itself, you are told the price — before dispatch.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, once the tank is cleared.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away by itself. That is why it matters more.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before we leave, we fire it up and confirm that it is running properly.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
