# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Highfurlong? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your motor off and keep your ignition off.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

The harm starts once it's pulled through your lines — it won't ignite, and it won't blend with diesel.

If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly flushed where the car stands in Highfurlong.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Highfurlong, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- Put your hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, and so do not bin it out.

- Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting FY3 7, or simply the name of a street close by, and so phone from the spot.

Never:

- Do not start your engine, even for a moment to move your car.

- Turning the key to ignition by itself sets the pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- Adding extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.

- Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance along Westfield Avenue.

- Do not try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.

The staff on duty at any Highfurlong filling station — the Texaco included — will usually lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains exactly where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's fed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the fumes.

Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

A vehicle topped up on a driveway in Normoss yesterday evening and left unstarted is the simple case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up yet — though once the engine turns, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and block filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it is flushed out.

Pipes holding AdBlue spell harm overnight for a vehicle parked around Highfurlong. Only inside the tank, it stays the same.

Then there's the water: it brings no lubrication to the components that need it most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Gulf's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the main fault.

Damage just comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and left in the tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Not burning, it can't simply be run through.

Crystals and corrosion stay through the following fill, and AdBlue splits again from the diesel, so thinning it won't work. Hence the flush counts so much, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Little Layton or the centre of Highfurlong equally.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Not run? Then the AdBlue sits only inside your tank, the simplest bit of the entire system to empty, anywhere your vehicle has come to rest across Lancashire.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Highfurlong

It's not deliberate. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light.

Mostly it is not the filling station: someone picks up a container driving home and pours it in outside the house.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

Rushing, outside Boundary Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone refills the vehicle.

Someone pours the bottle in outside their house, right off Blackpool Old Road, as the day ends.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills your vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park by The Squirrel.

Rented vehicles, brand-new cars, company cars, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each: the least familiar vehicles get it most.

Keep it off: that is the first response to the same slip, anywhere around Highfurlong or the remainder of Lancashire you happen to be.

## Highfurlong: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

With any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing through your filter and pipework.

Perhaps coming back from Boundary Park, or part way across Highfurlong, the motor might go rough, smoke, lose pace, light up the dash or stall.

No restarting to check: pull over once it is safe, then switch it off.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M55, under 5 miles from Highfurlong, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system. That's why a hop across Highfurlong to park near St Anne's Greenlands and a drive of under 15 miles towards Preston are such separate jobs.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once your engine has been running.

Very rarely does it leave permanent damage when it's caught early.

## Highfurlong: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

The car remains where it is, whether that's a road near Low Moor Community Centre, a drive, a layby or a filling station in Highfurlong, and our van travels to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if the motor has been run, since those replies decide the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together when your tank is drained, right there.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is cleaned right through because what remains will not flush out by itself.

After that, the filter: cleaned, or replaced if it must be. After that clean diesel, then a test of the vehicle.

Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where your motor hasn't run.

The equipment is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

New diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the final step.

At that point our engineers fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking space by Layton or a drive around Highfurlong.

Before leaving, our technicians confirm it is running correctly with fresh diesel in.

As the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

## Highfurlong: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job is different, and so no single quote is honest.

Three things shift the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one rests on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind Horsebridge Community Centre.

Before a figure, not afterwards, every enquiry from Highfurlong opens with the same three checks: the fuel, the amount, plus if the engine ran.

Given them, the range narrows to a single fixed figure.

Our quote is given on the call, before anyone sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

As the van is travelling, check your policy: plenty include misfuelling.
