# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hill: Why It Occurs

Leave the engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before the motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Hill.

Reading in advance? Then the rest covers how it comes about and how to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels around Bedford Place, like those in Hill, carry on two fluids; your motor takes just the diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## Hill: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and running dry means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Hill Lane, perhaps outside The Winston Hotel on the way home after work.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old motor — since a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, keeps on.

Polygon or the heart of Hill: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Bellevue or a forecourt in Hill.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Open the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of vehicles show what goes in which inlet just there.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel filler? Then look below the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Southampton Central? Check with the person who drove the car last before leaving, not once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, anywhere in Hampshire, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Rollesbrook Gardens, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both share a flap, make sure it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hill?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting your engine.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — so leave it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at BP, Esso or any forecourt will normally help pushing the car clear if you ask.

If you are on your own driveway around Hill, leave the vehicle where it stands.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Hill lies under 3 miles from the M271; on it, use the next junction.

A short hop across Hill is a smaller job than a run towards Southampton, under a mile away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## What happens when our engineers turn up in Hill

The van comes to your car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near St. Mark's Church, or outside Springhill Catholic Primary School.

Our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run, because those answers settle the work and the quote.

The quote comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, after your tank is drained.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears away unaided, however long it is left.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We do not go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## About Hill, for a moment

Hill is a suburban area located on the coast of Hampshire, near the city of Southampton. Hill sits at a low elevation of 16 metres, with many of its residents living in flats. Hill is close to other nearby places such as Polygon, Freemantle, and Banisters Park, and is situated approximately 69 miles from London.

## AdBlue drains across Hampshire, Hill included

Throughout SO postcodes, our vans covering Hill — a residential suburb — work the nearby places too, Banisters Park and Freemantle included.

Quickest of all: quote a SO15 5 postcode to our van.

No need to shift the vehicle.

Anywhere it stands — beside Central Baptist Church, on a lay-by en route to Rollesbrook Greenway, on a drive — that's where it gets cleared.

Awkward to explain, like the back of UCKG HelpCentre? Close to a county line? Asking beats guessing, so phone.

## In short, for Hill people

First, the cap; after that, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere around Hampshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — and so leave the car off and call 0333 366 0103.
