# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hill Head: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done just where the car stands in Hill Head, is normally all it needs if found before your motor runs.

Not happened yet? Below, the page explains the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels in Lee-on-the-Solent, as well as Hill Head, carry on two liquids; the engine gets just your diesel.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

There is a filler on every tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hill Head: how it takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Osborne View Road before work, or in the car park outside The Crofton on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second thing: a new car.

Nothing stops the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Hill Head or out in Stubbington.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Peel Common or a forecourt in Hill Head.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Look for it.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Fareham, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the light comes on — anywhere it is around Hampshire — a routine to follow.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Hurst Close.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## Hill Head: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your engine.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The staff at Asda, another forecourt nearby or another forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the vehicle away when asked.

Your own driveway around Hill Head is where it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

The next junction means where to leave when you are on the M27, under 5 miles from Hill Head.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Hill Head makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Portsmouth — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Hill Head, and what happens next

By Crofton Hammond Junior School, close to Hill Head Sailing Club or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Which fluid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since the answers decide the work and quote.

No one sets off before you have heard our price over the phone.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, once that tank is emptied.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and nothing washes away unaided, however long it is left.

After your filter has been flushed — or renewed, if needed — clean diesel goes in, and then the car is tested.

Before we leave, our technicians start it and check that it is running smoothly.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.

Fastest of all: quote a PO14 3 postcode to our van.

No need to move the vehicle.

Wherever it sits — near Titchfield Haven Visitor Centre, on a layby en route to Seafield Park, at home — that's where it is emptied.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Hill Head Harbour.

## For Hill Head drivers, the short version

Always, the cap; then, the pour.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same, leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it sits, anywhere across Hampshire.
