# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hill Top

Pause reading for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your motor has not turned, it is emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle is around Hill Top.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Many modern diesels in Stockton Brook, like those in Hill Top, run on two fluids; your engine takes only the diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

There is a filler for every tank.

Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have both together under one flap.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Hill Top?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a driveway off Broad Lane before work, or in the car park outside The Top Pub heading home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is the second thing: an unfamiliar car.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, carries on.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Hill Top or out in Hodgefield.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Whether a Hill Top forecourt or a driveway over in Ridgeway, spend a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask when you pick up a rental or fleet car — from Longport's car park, say — not when the warning appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

When the light goes on, wherever around Staffordshire, use this routine.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, engine off, and never rushed by Hough Hill on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Step five stays out.

## Hill Top: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Do not start your motor: that's where the short order of things starts.

Leave your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone starts your fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the Shell, ask the staff to help roll the car away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Hill Top.

Already started? Stop once it's safe, then switch off.

On the M6, under 10 miles from Hill Top, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Stoke-on-Trent, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Hill Top.

## Our arrival around Hill Top, and what happens next

The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside Brown Edge Village Hall, or by St Anne's CofE (VC) Primary School.

Those replies settle this work and our quote, so we ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

On the call itself, you hear our price — ahead of dispatch.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, after that tank is emptied.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before we go, we start the engine and confirm that it is running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after we get there, provided your motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

Quote a postcode that starts ST6 8, and our van arrives quickest.

Shifting your car is not needed.

Draining happens on the spot, whether a driveway, a street near Brown Edge St. Anne, or a lay-by towards Church Road Playing Fields.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Endon Methodist Church? Close to a county line? Checking beats assuming, and so ring.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it stands, anywhere in Staffordshire.
