# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hill Top

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Hill Top.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Not one liquid but two: that is how many modern diesels around Hill Top and Ambler Thorn carry, with diesel for your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think which cap to use.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hill Top: how it occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off Mossy Bank Close before work, or in the car park at The Pineberry on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and once it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you vehicles come second, as well. Rentals, new cars and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once begun, keeps on.

It takes seconds, be it out in Queensbury or bang in the centre of Hill Top.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Shibden Head or a forecourt in Hill Top.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- On plenty of cars, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Halifax? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere across West Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and not rushed by Thornton Road at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have located your filler and read it.

- The two under one flap? So confirm the lid on the diesel side is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then check again — confirm the diesel filler stayed shut throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Don't go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hill Top?

Do not start the engine: that is where the short order of things starts.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the Texaco, ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Hill Top.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

On the M606, under 5 miles from Hill Top, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Crossing Hill Top is less a job than a trip of under 5 miles towards Bradford, and so say.

## Our arrival around Hill Top, and what occurs next

The van comes to the car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Holy Trinity, or by Foxhill Primary School.

Our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run, because the answers decide this work and the quote.

That price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

A test is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

Before leaving, our engineers start the car and make sure that it's running smoothly.

Unstarted vehicles mostly need a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is fine on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.
