# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hill: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page down for now, keep your ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where your vehicle sits in Hill, is normally all it takes if found before your motor runs.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many modern diesels on the roads round Hill and Cliff carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for the two, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

It is in the gap that the error happens.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Hill

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Hill before work, or in the car park at Hervey's on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and once it's gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Whether it takes place in Under Hill or the middle of Hill, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in New Gate or a forecourt around Hill.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Check as you collect a rental or fleet car — from Brockholes's car park, say — not once the warning appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in West Yorkshire that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Cooper Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Never go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hill already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the base instead of mixing — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the staff to help push the car clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Murco, the Texaco or somewhere else.

If you are on your own driveway in Hill, leave it where it stands.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M62, under 10 miles from Hill, that means the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Wakefield, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Hill.

## When our engineers turn up around Hill, what takes place?

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Holmfirth Junior Infant and Nursery School, close to Holmfirth Civic Hall or on your own driveway.

We ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run, because the answers determine this work and our price.

That quote comes on the call, before any van leaves.

Then that tank is cleared and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

Once the fuel filter is cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your vehicle is tested.

We do not go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our engineers get there, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

## About Hill itself

Hill is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated on the riverside with a mix of terraced housing. Hill sits at an elevation of 219 metres, overlooking the surrounding landscape. ## AdBlue drains across West Yorkshire, Hill included

Holmfirth and New Town are among the towns near Hill, a residential suburb, that the same vans cover, throughout HD postcodes.

Quickest of all: quote a HD9 3 postcode to the van.

Your car does not need to move.

Wherever it stands — near Holmfirth Library, on a layby heading to Victoria Park, at home — that is where it gets drained.

Guessing won't help behind Compo's house, on a border, or somewhere awkward to describe; ring and check.

## For Hill drivers, the short version

First, the cap; after that, the tip.

Still AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can drain it wherever it is, wherever around West Yorkshire: switch it off then ring 0333 366 0103.
