# Hillend: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Hillend, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the engine has been run.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## What to do right now, Hillend: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

- Pull your keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Put the hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, and so don't bin it away.

- Tell us a postcode starting SK14 6, or whatever street lies nearest, and our van finds you straight — so call from wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- Don't start your engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Pouring in more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Bucklow Close.

- No draining it yourself, either, at the verge.

Get the people behind the counter to help you roll the vehicle off the pumps if you are on a forecourt around Hillend, whether it is the Tesco or elsewhere.

At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

A motor filled on a driveway in Hodgefold overnight and left unstarted is the straightforward case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but when the motor turns, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

It attacks certain metals found in fuel systems, working on any part it reaches until it is removed from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny channels.

Pipes holding AdBlue mean damage by morning for a car sitting around Hillend. Just inside that tank, it stays stable.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the BP, and the problem is thinned fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it's inside your tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid.

It does not burn, and so it cannot just be run through.

Crystals and corrosion stay after the following tankful, and AdBlue splits again out of your diesel, and so watering it won't work. That is why the flush counts so much, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in The Hague or the heart of Hillend equally.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Not started? Then the AdBlue waits only inside your tank, the simplest bit of the entire system to clear, wherever the vehicle has come to rest around Greater Manchester.

## Hillend: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It usually happens at home, from a bottle bought on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Broadbottom Church of England Primary School the top-up is rushed.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Woodlands Close.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up the car after dark, parked in the car park by Harewood Arms.

Rented motors, brand-new cars, fleet motors, or the second car in a family with one of each: the least familiar cars see it most.

Leave it off: that's the first step to the same mistake, wherever in Hillend or the remainder of Greater Manchester you are.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hillend, and your engine started?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing via the filter and pipework.

You may notice the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Great Wood or halfway across Hillend.

No starting it again to test: pull over when it is safe, then turn it off.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M67, under a mile from Hillend, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system. That's why crossing Hillend to park beside Hattersley Baptist Church and a drive of under 10 miles towards Manchester are such separate jobs.

Let us know about how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after your engine has been started.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it is spotted early.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Hillend

Anywhere it has come to rest around Hillend — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a road beside St. Mary Magdalene's Church — the van comes to the car.

Before anything else our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has been run, because those answers decide this work.

Next, emptying that tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

A full flush counts much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not wash out on its own.

Testing the car follows at the end, once fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter gets cleaned or, where necessary, swapped.

Not run? In that case expect about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Bleeding the fuel system with fresh diesel comes at the end.

Starting the car comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, at Broadbottom or on a driveway in Hillend.

It is tested on fresh diesel to be sure it runs properly before we head off.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## About Hillend

Hillend is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated on the riverside with a mix of terraced housing and other residential properties. Hillend sits at an elevation of 196 metres, approximately 9.6 miles east of Manchester, and is close to nearby places such as Hattersley and Broadbottom. Hillend is part of the larger North West region, with London being around 155.8 miles to the south. Hillend has a population of around 3319 people, living in a variety of housing types, predominantly terraced.

## AdBlue drains across Hillend and Greater Manchester

AdBlue jobs around Hillend go to vans that serve the towns around it — Hattersley, Broadbottom plus Mudd — and most of Greater Manchester further out, across SK postcodes.

Close to a border, or anywhere awkward to explain? Asking is better than guessing, so phone.

Hillend is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## Hillend: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Every job is different, so not one fixed price is fair.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, since an open driveway is easier for our van to get to safely than a tight spot behind The Etherow Centre.

Before a quote, not afterwards, each enquiry from Hillend begins with three checks: the liquid, the amount, plus whether it ran.

Those answers shrink a range right down to a single number.

Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Check your policy whilst we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## Beside your car around Hillend, still?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and if the engine ran are all our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder across Greater Manchester, Hillend too.
