# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hillfoot: How It Occurs and How to Stop It

Pause reading for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor hasn't run, it is emptied and fully rinsed where your vehicle sits around Hillfoot.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Not one liquid but two: that's how many newer diesels around Hillfoot and Philadelphia carry, with diesel for your engine.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.

There's a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what cap it needs.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## Hillfoot: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

On a drive off Normandale Road before work, or in the car park outside The Masons Arms on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and once it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Walkley or the middle of Hillfoot, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Hillfoot forecourt or a drive over in Neepsend, spend a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives when your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you collect a hire car or company car — from Sheffield's car park, perhaps — not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the warning appears — wherever you are in South Yorkshire — a routine to use.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Langsett Crescent.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — once you have located the filler and read the cap.

- Both behind one flap? Then confirm the cap on your diesel side is still closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and check again — confirm your diesel cap remained shut throughout. After that, start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Hillfoot?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting the motor.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Morrisons or the JET, ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Hillfoot.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

On the M1, under 5 miles from Hillfoot, that means the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Sheffield, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Hillfoot.

## When our engineers get there around Hillfoot, what occurs?

Our van reaches your car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Hampden View Church, or by Walkley Primary School.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since those replies determine this work and the price.

The quote comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

Before we go, our engineers fire it up and make sure that it's running smoothly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor hasn't run take about half an hour once our technicians are there.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
