# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hillmead

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep the motor off then keep your ignition off.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

The trouble begins once it is sucked through the pump — it won't burn, and it won't combine with diesel.

If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly rinsed where your car sits around Hillmead.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hillmead: the first few minutes

Do these:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and about what quantity, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting SN5 5, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Never do these:

- Shifting your car even a few yards is no reason to start the motor.

- The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Leave it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way up Hillmead.

- No draining it yourself, at all, at the verge.

Rolling your car off the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Hillmead forecourt you're on, the Shell or any other.

At your own driveway, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart instead of mixing — entirely unlike fuel.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Ramleaze last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the components it reaches for as long as it stays there.

A vehicle left standing around Hillmead with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

An issue of thin fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Asda.

Harm only comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and left inside that tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot simply be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Whether the car sits in Westlea or the heart of Hillmead, turning it over "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other error, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Not started? Then the AdBlue sits only in that tank, the simplest section of the entire system to empty, anywhere your car has come to rest around Wiltshire.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Hillmead?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors waits right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Brook Field Primary School the top-up is rushed.

After work, a container is tipped in on a drive near Mead Way.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside Woodlands Edge, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the cars drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever in Wiltshire, Hillmead included, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first response: keep it off.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hillmead, and the motor started?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

It has been drawn through the filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

You may notice the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Shaw Forest Park or halfway across Hillmead.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M4, under 3 miles from Hillmead, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

A quick hop across Hillmead to the car park by Swindon Lagoons is one thing; driving for Bath, under 50 miles away, is something else, since every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance matters.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Once the motor has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up.

Very rarely does it leave permanent damage if it's noticed quickly.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Hillmead?

The car stays where it is, whether that is a street near Holy Trinity, a drive, a layby or a forecourt around Hillmead, and the van comes to it.

Three answers shape the work, so first our engineers ask which fluid went in, roughly what quantity, plus whether your motor has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out as one when that tank is emptied, right there.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is cleaned all the way through since what remains won't wash away by itself.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs where your motor has not run.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Finally, the system is primed with fresh diesel.

Whether it is a parking bay outside Swindon or a driveway in Hillmead, that is where we start the engine and you drive off.

Before we go, our technicians confirm it is running smoothly with new diesel in.

As the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## AdBlue drains across Wiltshire, Hillmead included

Wild Duck Mead, Roughmoor and Rivermead are among the towns near Hillmead that the same teams serve, along with much of Wiltshire further out, throughout the SN postcode area.

Near a boundary, or somewhere tricky to explain? Asking beats assuming, and so ring.

No towing is needed. In Hillmead, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: your vehicle is emptied where it stands, whether on a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Hillmead

There's no honest single quote, because the jobs aren't the same.

Three things change the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight gap behind Roughmoor Community Hall.

That's why every call from Hillmead starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run.

Once they are known, a range turns into a single fixed number.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
