# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hillsborough: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor hasn't turned, it's emptied and fully rinsed where the vehicle is around Hillsborough.

Reading in advance? Then the rest explains how it happens and what to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the engine — but many modern diesels driven round Hillsborough and Loxley Bottom carry a second liquid as well.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where a spray treats the fumes.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel gets filled at every filling station call-out, again and again.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

It's in the gap that the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Hillsborough?

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Balmain Road, perhaps at Horse & Jockey on the way home after work.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, keeps on.

Wadsley or the middle of Hillsborough: it is the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Boulder Hill or a forecourt around Hillsborough.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On many motors, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Check for it.

- Cannot find it next to the diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says where.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Sheffield, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the warning appears — wherever it is around South Yorkshire — a routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Braemore Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap never came off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Skip stage five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hillsborough already?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

The staff at BP, JET or another forecourt will usually help pushing the vehicle away when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Hillsborough.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next junction means where to leave if you are on the M1, under 5 miles from Hillsborough.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Sheffield, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Hillsborough.

## When we arrive in Hillsborough, what occurs?

Our van comes to the car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, beside William Sutton Community Hall, or by Marlcliffe Community Primary School.

Our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run, because the replies decide the work and our price.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, once the tank is emptied.

More than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals form, some metals are attacked, and none of it washes away unaided, however long it is left.

The filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; then a check of the vehicle.

Next our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before we go.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.
