# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hilltop? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and no harm starts until your motor sucks it round.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly cleaned where your car sits around Hilltop.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Hilltop, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do these:

- So no one can turn your ignition on, pull your keys away.

- Put the hazard lights on if you're at all near moving traffic.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting HP5 3, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Shifting the car even a short way is no reason to fire up your engine.

- Switching your key to ignition alone sets the pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, so it is pointless.

- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short way along West View.

- By the road, don't try draining it yourself.

The staff on duty at any Hilltop forecourt — the Shell included — will usually lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask.

At your own driveway, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

It doesn't blend. Once it is tipped into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel.

The intake sucks fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in The Broadway last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

After it's drawn in, the damage comes in two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny channels; meanwhile, because it eats at some metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains inside.

Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it till morning in Hilltop makes things worse. In your tank alone, waiting costs nothing.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it flows; water gives no lubrication, and that is a separate form of harm.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

Petrol put into a diesel on Applegreen's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that's the whole fault.

No damage is done as long as it sits put, blended into your diesel — only when the motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Lye Green or the middle of Hilltop.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Buckinghamshire your car is sitting.

## Hilltop: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap — may look the same. No one intends it; many designs invite it.

A container picked up while driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the usual route.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases.

Hurrying, outside Brushwood Junior School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent refills the car.

After work, a container goes in on a drive close to The Spinney.

Or a driver new to that flap refills the vehicle after dark, parked in the car park outside The Griffin.

It crops up most in a rental, a new car, a fleet motor, or the other motor in a family with both fuel types — the vehicles people know least.

Wherever you're around Hilltop or the rest of Buckinghamshire, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hilltop, and the engine started?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

It's been pulled through the filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Maybe returning from Lycrome Wood, or midway across Hilltop, the motor might go rough, smoke, drop pace, light up your dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M25, under 10 miles from Hilltop, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Distance counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, so heading towards St Albans, under 15 miles away, gives a much bigger job than hopping across Hilltop to the car park by Chesham Leisure Centre.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to flush once your engine has been run, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

Very rarely does it leave lasting damage if it is noticed quickly.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Hilltop

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Hilltop: a side street close to Emmanuel, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

The work rests on three answers, and our technicians ask for first — what was put in, the quantity, and if the motor has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one when your tank is emptied, right there.

A full flush matters much more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains won't wash out on its own.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers turn up, if your motor hasn't run.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to bleed the fuel system on new diesel.

Then our technicians start the engine and you drive off, whether from a parking bay at Amersham or a driveway in Hilltop.

The test before we head off is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

No garage is needed at any stage, with the whole job done then and there.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

Hilltop has a population of around 4694 residents.

## AdBlue drains around Hilltop and across Buckinghamshire

Over the HP postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue call-outs in Hilltop serve much of Buckinghamshire as well, Codmore, Newtown and Griffitts Yard among them.

Guessing doesn't help close to a county line or anywhere hard to describe; phone and ask.

Wherever the vehicle stands — your driveway at home, a residential street, a parking area, a filling station — our engineers drain it there, and there's no need to take it to us; which suits Hilltop, a residential suburb, well.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Hilltop: the cost of fixing it

No flat price would be honest, because every job is different.

The price moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Chiltern Citizens Advice.

Before a quote, not afterwards, each enquiry from Hilltop opens with three questions: the fuel, the quantity, and if it ran.

With those replies, a range shrinks to one fixed figure.

Before anyone heads out, you are told our price by phone. And you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is on the way, check your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.

## In Hilltop and still next to the car?

In that case, touch nothing — that is the best step available.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder, in Hilltop or wherever within Buckinghamshire, once you call 0333 366 0103 saying it was AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether it ran.
