# Hillview: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Stop reading for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Hillview, finding it before your motor turns usually leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels around Hendon, like those in Hillview, run on two fluids; the motor gets just your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place the two together under one flap.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## Hillview: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Leighton Road, or heading home in the car park outside The Rosedene.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and once the pour starts, no part stops it.

Grangetown or the heart of Hillview: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Sunderland or a forecourt around Hillview.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Sunderland.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere around Tyne and Wear the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Ludlow Road.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.

- Both behind one flap? So make sure the cap on the diesel filler is still shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hillview already?

Do not start the engine: that's where the short order of things begins.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at Shell, Asda or another forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the vehicle away if you ask.

If you are on your own drive around Hillview, leave the car where it sits.

Already run? Pull over when it's sensible, then turn off.

The next junction is where to come off if you are on the Western Highway, under 10 miles from Hillview.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Hillview is less work than a run of under 3 miles towards Sunderland, and so tell us.

## Hillview: what occurs when our engineers get there

Outside Hill View Junior Academy, close to St Cecilia's RC or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Both the work and our quote rest on three answers — what fluid, what amount, and if it's run — so we ask.

Nobody heads out until you have heard our quote by phone.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away unaided. Hence it matters more.

Filter cleaned or, where needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the car.

Your engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs properly, all before our engineers head off.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our technicians arrive, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.
