# Hillyland: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Keep the motor and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Around Hillyland, catching it before your engine runs normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush on the spot.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Hillyland and Tulloch carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in on every forecourt call-out, again and again.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think which filler to use.

It is in the gap that the slip happens.

## Hillyland: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Auld House Wynd, perhaps at The Welcome Inn on the way home after work.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Hillyland or out in Letham.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Huntingtower Haugh or a forecourt in Hillyland, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it is when the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Perth.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere across Perth and Kinross the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Ferguson Drive.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Finish once your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently through its own spout.

- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

Find during the second or third step that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Hillyland: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief order, then. Top of that: your engine stays unstarted.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of blending — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Tesco, Esso or another forecourt will normally lend a hand to push your car clear if asked.

On your own drive around Hillyland? Then your car remains put.

Where your motor has been run already, pull over safely then turn the car off.

The next junction means the place to leave when you are on the M90, under a mile from Hillyland.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Hillyland makes a smaller job than heading under 3 miles towards Perth — so say roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when our technicians arrive in Hillyland

Wherever the car has stopped, be it by the local primary school, near Perth Baptist Church or at home, our van comes to it.

What liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since the replies set the work and quote.

No one heads out until you've had the price over the phone.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, once the tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

Testing is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

Your engine is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs correctly, all before our technicians head off.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers get there, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.

Moving the car isn't necessary.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Seven Acres, a side street close to Our Lady of Lourdes: we drain the vehicle where it sits.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of East Huntingtower Henge, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## For Hillyland drivers, the short version

Read the cap before you tip.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere around Perth and Kinross, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — and so leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
