# Hinkshay: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Keep the engine and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before the engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Hinkshay.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Many modern diesels in Telford, as well as Hinkshay, carry on two fluids; the motor gets only the diesel.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to fresh it, from its own tank.

There is a filler for each tank.

Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both side by side under one flap.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Far less often, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## Hinkshay: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

On a driveway off Belvedere Court before work, or in the car park outside Three Crowns on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes a few seconds, whether in Town Park or right in the centre of Hinkshay.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Hinkshay forecourt or a drive out in Stirchley, spend a few seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check as you pick up a rental or company car — from Telford Central's car park, say — not once the warning appears.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever in Shropshire, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Hinkshay Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently through its own spout.

- Close the cap, and look once more — making sure your diesel filler stayed shut the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hinkshay already?

Brief order, then. First: the motor stays unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Asda or the Shell, ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the petrol pump.

On your own drive in Hinkshay? So your car stays put.

When the motor has been run already, pull over somewhere safe then switch the car off.

The next junction means where to come off if you are on the M54, under 3 miles from Hinkshay.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Hinkshay makes a smaller job than driving under 15 miles towards Wolverhampton — so say about how far it went.

## Hinkshay: what takes place when our engineers turn up

Our van comes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Exotic Zoo Wildlife Park, or outside Randlay Primary School.

What fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because the replies decide the work and price.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Then that tank is drained and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after we arrive, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.

## Hinkshay and Shropshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a residential suburb, Hinkshay shares its vans nearby areas — Dawley, Malinslee — right across TF postcodes and the wider area around them.

Give a postcode beginning TF4 3, and our van gets there fastest.

Shifting your car isn't needed.

Anywhere it sits — near St James Church, on a lay-by en route to Telford Town Park, on a drive — that's where it is cleared.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Wonderland? Close to a border? Asking is better than guessing, and so phone.

## Hinkshay drivers: the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around Shropshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — and so leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103.
