# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hirst

Pause reading for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Hirst, finding it before your motor runs normally means draining and a full flush on the spot.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels around Stakeford, like those in Hirst, run on two fluids; your motor takes just your diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hirst: how it occurs

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Hawthorn Road before work, or in the car park outside New Hirst & District CIU on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: a strange vehicle.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and after the tip begins, no part halts it.

It's a few seconds, whether out in Ashington or bang in the heart of Hirst.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in North Seaton Colliery or a forecourt in Hirst, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it is when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Ashington.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are in Northumberland — a routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Fourth Avenue.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently through the own spout.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at the second or third step that the bottle went into the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Step five stays off limits.

## Hirst: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

The attendants at Shell, Asda or another forecourt will usually help pushing the car away if you ask.

If you are on your own drive around Hirst, leave the car where it sits.

Already run? Stop when it's safe, then switch off.

On the A167(M), under 15 miles from Hirst, that means the next junction.

Distance counts — a quick hop across Hirst makes a smaller job than driving under 15 miles to Newcastle upon Tyne — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When we arrive around Hirst, what occurs?

Outside St Aidan's Catholic Primary School, Ashington, close to St Andrew's Seaton Hirst or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run, because the replies decide the work and our quote.

The price comes on the call, before any van leaves.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

Once the fuel filter has been cleaned — or renewed, where required — clean diesel is added, and finally the car is tested.

We don't go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our engineers get there, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## Hirst and Northumberland: AdBlue drains across the area

Over NE postcodes, the vans that cover Hirst — a residential suburb — work the nearby locations too, West Sleekburn and North Seaton among them.

The van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting NE63 9.

Your car remains put.

Wherever it sits — near Northumberland Aged Mineworkers Homes Centenary Group 1966, in a lay-by en route to Hirst Park, on a drive — that is where it is cleared.

Assuming won't help behind Salvation Army Ashington Corps, close to a boundary, or anywhere awkward to pin down; phone and check.

## For Hirst drivers, the short version

Pour nothing till you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave the vehicle off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it sits, anywhere across Northumberland.
