# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hockley: Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Leave your motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out right where your car stands in Hockley, is usually what it needs when caught before your engine runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Diesel goes to your motor — but plenty of current diesels driven about Hockley and Freasley hold another fluid as well.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to fresh it, from its own tank.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on every forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Hockley?

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

Haste follows from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Liberty Road, or on the way home in the car park at The Overwoods Arms.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — because a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

Whether it takes place in Whateley or the middle of Hockley, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around Hockley or a drive over in Two Gates. Seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many motors show which belongs in each filler just there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The previous driver knows. Check as you collect a hire car or company car — at Wilnecote's car park, say — not once the warning appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Staffordshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Castle Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- Both behind a single flap? So make sure the lid on the diesel side is still closed before raising the bottle.

- Stop once the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently through the own spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hockley?

Short list, then. Top of it: your engine stays unstarted.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Esso, Texaco or any forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the vehicle away if you ask.

Your own driveway around Hockley is the place it should stay.

Where the motor has been run by now, stop safely and turn the vehicle off.

Come off the M42 — under a mile out of Hockley — at the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Hockley is smaller a job than a run of under 10 miles to Lichfield, and so say.

## When we get there in Hockley, what occurs?

Outside Heathfields Infant Academy, near Town Wall Stones or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since those replies set the work and quote.

On the call itself, you hear our price — before dispatch.

Draining the tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. That is why it matters more.

After your filter has been cleaned — or replaced, where needed — fresh diesel is added, and finally your car is tested.

The motor is started next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before we leave.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run need roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## AdBlue drains around Hockley and across Staffordshire

Hockley is a residential suburb, and the teams that cover it also work the towns around it, Wilnecote and Dosthill among them, across the B postcode area.

Quickest of all: quote a B77 5 postcode to the van.

Your car remains where it is.

Draining takes place right there, whether a drive, a street near Claymore Gym, or a layby on the way to Beauchamp Road Park.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Holy Trinity Church, ring and ask instead of assuming.

## The short version for Hockley drivers

Tip no AdBlue until you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere across Staffordshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — so leave the vehicle off and phone 0333 366 0103.
