# Hoe: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and your ignition too.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the fuel system draws it in.

Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Hoe.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps right now, Hoe: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

- Remove the keys, which prevents anyone turning the electrics on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call right where you are. Say a GU5 9 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Do not do these:

- Shifting the car even a few yards is no reason to fire up the motor.

- Many diesels run their fuel pump the instant your ignition goes on, so leave it off.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't thin it.

- Keep the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way up Crest Hill.

- By the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

Ask the attendants to help you move the car away from the pumps if you're on a forecourt around Hoe, whether it's the Esso or elsewhere.

On your own drive, do not move it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

From a dedicated reservoir it is fed directly to your exhaust, cleaning what the engine emits.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps apart instead of blending — entirely unlike fuel.

The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that is just where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Peaslake last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there.

Overnight, a car sitting around Hoe with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it's just inside the tank, it doesn't.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing through them, and so the water part damages them in its own right.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have a problem of thin fuel.

Blended into the diesel and sitting still, it is no threat for now; running the engine does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

Because it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Abinger Hammer or the middle of Hoe.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever in Surrey your vehicle sits.

## Hoe: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many vehicles place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two may look the same. Nobody intends it.

Mostly it's not the forecourt: a driver picks up a container driving home and pours it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways cover most cases.

Rushing, outside Peaslake Free School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent refills your car.

Someone tips the container in at home, just off Fulvens, as the day ends.

Or the car is topped up in the car park at Hurtwood Hotel, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It crops up most in a hire car, a new car, a company vehicle, or the spare vehicle of a home with one of each fuel types — the vehicles people know least.

Wherever you're around Hoe or the remainder of Surrey, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave it off.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hoe?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank.

With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing via your filter and lines.

Maybe returning from Oxmore Copse, or midway across Hoe, the motor may run rough, smoke, drop pace, light up your dash or stall.

Once you safely can, pull over then turn it off — with no restarting to see.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M25, under 10 miles from Hoe, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That is why crossing Hoe to park near Peaselake Village Hall and a drive of under 25 miles for Westminster are very separate jobs.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once your engine has been running.

Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it is caught quickly.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Hoe: what it takes

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that's a road beside St Mark's Church, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station in Hoe, and our van travels to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has run, because those answers decide this work.

Then the tank is drained where the car stands, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Next, your filter: flushed, or changed when it must be. Then clean diesel, and then a check of your car.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we arrive, if your engine has not run.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Priming the fuel system with clean diesel comes last.

Then our technicians fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking space by Gomshall or a drive around Hoe.

The check before we go is that it runs properly on fresh diesel.

No workshop is needed at any point, with the whole job done then and there.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Hoe

Hoe is a small village in Surrey, situated on the riverside at an elevation of around 130 metres. Hoe lies within the South East region of England, approximately 25 miles from London. Hoe is characterised by its predominantly detached housing and is close to nearby places such as Burrows Cross and Sutton Abinger. Hoe has a population of around 553 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Hoe and Surrey

Over the GU postcode area, the teams answering AdBlue jobs in Hoe serve most of Surrey as well, Burrows Cross, Sutton Abinger and Smoky Hole among them.

Phone and ask instead of guessing when you are close to a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

A mobile service fits Hoe, a village: you have no need to take your vehicle to us, since our engineers drain it there, on a drive, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Hoe: the cost of fixing it

Every job differs, so no fixed price would be fair.

Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open driveway is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight gap behind Abinger Hammer Village Hall.

That's why each call from Hoe starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it's run.

Their replies shrink a range right down to a single figure.

Before anyone sets off, you are told our quote by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is on the way, dig out your insurance: many cover misfuelling.

## In Hoe and still alongside the vehicle?

Right now, the best thing to do with the car is to leave it.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Hoe or anywhere across Surrey.
