# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hole: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page aside for now, keep the ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your engine hasn't run, it's drained and fully rinsed where the vehicle is around Hole.

Reading before the event? Then the rest covers why it happens and how to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Hole and Row carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt call-out, again and again.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens in Hole

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a driveway off Meadow Close before work, or in the car park at The Fox on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and once it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you cars are next, too. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

No part stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Bradley or the middle of Hole, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Hole forecourt or a driveway over in Crewgarth, spend a few seconds over these before any goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at Langwathby's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Cumbria that is.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, motor off, and not rushed beside Currah Close at the roadside.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It seems silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Finish when the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour slowly using its built-in spout.

- Shut the cap, then look again — making sure your diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. After that, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hole already?

Short order, then. First: your motor remains unstarted.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

Filling up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or another forecourt will normally help to push the vehicle away when you ask.

At home around Hole? Then the car remains put.

Already started? Stop once it is sensible, then switch off.

On the M6, under 10 miles from Hole, that means the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Carlisle, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Hole.

## What takes place when we turn up around Hole

The van comes to the car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, near St Luke, or outside Culgaith CofE School.

Both the work and the quote rest on three answers — which fluid, which amount, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once your tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

Before we go, our technicians start the engine and make sure that it is running smoothly.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor has not run take roughly half an hour once we arrive.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

## About Hole, for a moment

Hole is a small suburban area in Cumbria, situated inland at an elevation of around 160 metres. Hole lies approximately 18.8 miles from Carlisle and 243.4 miles from London, within a rural landscape of rolling hills and scattered settlements. Hole is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its development as a residential area. Hole remains a quiet community with a population of around 502 people.

## AdBlue drains around Hole and across Cumbria

Being a residential suburb, Hole shares its vans surrounding places — Ousby, Shire — all the way through CA postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

A postcode starting CA10 1 gets the van to you fastest.

No need to move the vehicle.

Draining takes place right there, be it a driveway, a road by Skirwith Village Hall, or a lay-by towards Gillbank Wood.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of St John the Evangelist, ring and ask instead of guessing.

## For Hole people, the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere in Cumbria, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — so leave the vehicle off then phone 0333 366 0103.
