# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hollinfare: How It Occurs and How to Stop It

Leave the engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Around Hollinfare, finding it before your engine turns normally means draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

Reading before the event? In that case what follows covers how it comes about and what to prevent it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels on the roads round Hollinfare and Glazebrook carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for the two, while others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Hollinfare: how it happens

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Birch Road, perhaps at The Black Swan on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar motors come second, as well. Hire cars, new cars and company motors place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once started, carries on.

Whether it happens in Hollins Green or the middle of Hollinfare, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Hollinfare forecourt or a drive out in Warburton, take a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Glazebrook, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — anywhere it is around Cheshire — a routine to follow.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush beside Sycamore Crescent on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The two under one flap? So make sure the cap on the diesel side stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Finish when that tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly through its own spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Stage five is out.

## Hollinfare: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief list, then. First: your engine remains unstarted.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

On a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, Tesco Extra Petrol Station or another — the attendants will normally help push the vehicle clear, if you ask.

On your own drive around Hollinfare? So the car stays put.

Already started? Stop once it is sensible, then switch off.

The next junction is where to leave if you're on the M62, under 3 miles from Hollinfare.

About how far did it go? Crossing Hollinfare is less work than a run of under 10 miles towards Salford, so tell us.

## Hollinfare: what occurs when our technicians turn up

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Helen's Church of England Primary School, near St Helens C of E Church or on your own driveway.

Which liquid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because the answers set both work and quote.

Nobody heads out before you have had the quote by phone.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Testing is last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

Your engine is started next and tested to make sure it runs smoothly, all before we head off.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor has not run need roughly half an hour after our technicians are there.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Shifting your car isn't necessary.

Wherever it sits — near 22nd Warrington East (1st Hollins Green) Scout Group, in a lay-by en route to Village Green, on a drive — that's where it gets cleared.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Hollins Green Community Centre, ring and ask instead of assuming.

## Hollinfare motorists: the short version

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Leave it switched off then call 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, across Cheshire.
