# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Holmbush? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave your engine off and leave the ignition off.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

Being water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only starts when the pump begins drawing it.

If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully flushed where your car sits in Holmbush.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Holmbush: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

- Pull your keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Put the hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.

- Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.

- Ring right where you are. Say a PL25 3 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Don't do these:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll your vehicle: the engine remains off.

- Switching your key to ignition by itself starts the pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Daniels Lane.

- Don't try to drain the car yourself at the roadside.

On a forecourt around Holmbush, whether it is the Tesco or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

On your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, where it cleans the gas.

A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart rather than mixing — quite unlike fuel.

The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Mount Charles last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow channels; and, because it eats at some metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains inside.

A car left sitting in Holmbush with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

The water in it does harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Asda and you have an issue of thin fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it is in your tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Nor can it be watered down, because it splits back out — and the following fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Holmbush or out in Boscoppa, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Emptying a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere in Cornwall your vehicle has stopped.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Holmbush?

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and after dark the two can look identical. No one intends it.

Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Charlestown Primary School.

In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Whieldon Road.

Another pattern: dim light, the car park by Holmbush Inn, and someone using that flap for the first time.

The least known vehicles get it most — rentals, brand-new ones, fleet ones, and the spare car of a home with both fuel types.

Anywhere around Cornwall, Holmbush included, the slip does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it switched off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Holmbush?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

It has been pulled through the fuel filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

You may notice your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Sandy Hill Park or halfway across Holmbush.

Pull over when safe. Turn off. Leave the vehicle off rather than testing it again.

Every start pulls more of that through.

Holmbush lies over 50 miles from the M5; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Holmbush to the car park by Seventh Day Adventist Church is a very different job from a run towards Truro, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once your engine has been run.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it's caught soon.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Holmbush

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Holmbush: a side street near Bethel Methodist Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three replies decide the job, so before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, about what quantity, and whether your engine has turned over.

Next, emptying your tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

A full flush counts far more after AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains will not clear away by itself.

Testing your vehicle comes last, after clean diesel is added and the fuel filter is cleaned or, if necessary, swapped.

Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when your engine has not run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

The final step is to prime the system on fresh diesel.

At that point our technicians fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking bay by St Austell or a drive in Holmbush.

We confirm it runs correctly on new diesel before we go.

No workshop is required at any stage, with the whole job done then and there.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

## AdBlue drains across Cornwall, Holmbush included

The vans that answer AdBlue call-outs around Holmbush also cover the spots around it, Bethel, Sandy Bottom and Charlestown among them, and most of Cornwall beyond, across the PL postcode area.

Assuming won't help by a border or anywhere hard to describe; phone and check.

Wherever your car stands — your drive at home, a residential street, a parking area, a forecourt — our technicians drain it there, with no need to bring it to us; which suits Holmbush, a residential suburb, well.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Holmbush

Because each jobs differ, a single price wouldn't be honest.

Three things move the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints St Austell Chapel.

Which fluid was put in, what quantity, plus if it ran: each Holmbush enquiry opens by asking exactly that, before any figure, not afterwards.

The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Before anyone sets off, you are told our price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Look at your insurance while we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## In Holmbush and still next to the vehicle?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with your car is to leave it.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it ran is all our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest throughout Cornwall, Holmbush too.
