# Holme Hill: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your motor hasn't run, it is drained and thoroughly rinsed where your vehicle is in Holme Hill.

Reading in advance? In that case the rest explains how it happens and how to stop it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads around Holme Hill and East Marsh carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to clean them, from a separate tank.

There is a filler for every tank.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place the two side by side under one flap.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## Holme Hill: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Convamore Road, perhaps outside Hainton Recreation Club on the way home that evening.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once begun, keeps on.

Grimsby or the heart of Holme Hill: it is the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around Holme Hill or a driveway over in Grant Thorold. Seconds, that's all.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Check for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Grimsby Town.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light comes on — wherever it is across Lincolnshire — a routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Ropery Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- The two under one flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel filler is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays out.

## Holme Hill: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than blending — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Asda, the Esso or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Holme Hill.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M180, under 15 miles from Holme Hill, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Holme Hill is a smaller job than a run towards Kingston upon Hull, under 25 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when our engineers get there in Holme Hill

Anywhere the car has stopped, whether by Edward Heneage Primary Academy, near St Christopher's Methodist Church or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because those replies decide the work and our price.

That quote comes on the call, before any van leaves.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once your tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter cleaned or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running properly.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.
