# Holt End: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

The harm starts once it is pulled through the lines — it will not ignite, and it will not blend with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Holt End, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your engine has been run.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Holt End

Things to do:

- Take the keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.

- If you are at all close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and about how much, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting GU34 5, or simply the name of a street close by, and so call from the spot.

Things not to do:

- Don't start the motor, even for a moment to move the vehicle.

- Switching the key to ignition alone sets the pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Don't drive the car anywhere, not even a short distance up Tinker's Lane.

- No draining it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

On a forecourt around Holt End, whether it's the BP or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle clear of the pump.

If you're on your own drive, leave it precisely where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to treat the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Thedden last night and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of the tank, untouched — but it would be the first thing through once your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

Once it's sucked in, the damage takes two forms.

What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and block filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is cleared out.

Overnight, a vehicle parked in Holt End with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; where it is just in your tank, it doesn't.

And there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the another forecourt nearby, and this problem is thinned fuel.

Harm just comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting inside that tank, it does none.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, since it splits again — and the next fill will not clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Holt End or out in Hattingley, does more harm than nearly any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever around Hampshire your car has come to rest, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue still in the tank: the easiest bit of any fuel system to clear.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Holt End

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars rests right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside St Mary's Bentworth Church of England Primary School.

Near Jennie Green Lane, someone tips a bottle in on that drive after work.

Else, after dark outside The Star Inn (closed), the vehicle gets refilled by a driver using that flap the first time.

Hired cars, new motors, company cars, or the second vehicle in a home with both fuels: the least known cars see it the most.

Wherever you are in Holt End or the remainder of Hampshire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Holt End, and the motor started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank.

With any running, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, having passed via the fuel filter and lines.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — returning from New Town Copse, perhaps, or part way across Holt End.

Pull over when safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off rather than testing it again.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M3, under 10 miles from Holt End, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system. That's why a hop across Holt End to park beside Bentworth Hall and a drive of under 15 miles towards Winchester are such separate jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

We do all of the cleaning where the car has come to a stop, and once your engine has run there is more of it.

If it is caught quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Holt End: what it takes

Anywhere it has stopped around Holt End — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a street by La Aule — our van comes to the vehicle.

The work depends on three answers, which our technicians get before all else — which fluid was put in, the amount, and whether the motor has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together after that tank is emptied, right there.

The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

A test of your vehicle follows at the end, after clean diesel is added and the fuel filter is flushed or, if necessary, swapped.

About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when your motor has not run.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Last, the system is primed with fresh diesel.

You head off as soon as we have started it, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway in Holt End or in a bay outside Alton.

It is tested on fresh diesel to be sure it runs properly before we leave.

Our technicians do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

## About Holt End, briefly

Holt End is a small hamlet in Hampshire, situated inland at an elevation of 186 metres, approximately 12.5 miles from Winchester. Holt End lies within a rural area, near the villages of Bentworth, Wivelrod, and Medstead, and is characterized by detached housing. Holt End is also relatively close to London, being about 47.2 miles away, while still maintaining its rural setting.

## AdBlue drains across Holt End and Hampshire

Bentworth, Wivelrod and Medstead are among the places near Holt End that the same teams serve, together with most of Hampshire further out, over the GU postcode area.

Ring and ask instead of guessing when you are by a border, or somewhere tricky to explain.

Holt End is a rural hamlet, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## Holt End: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because the callouts differ, a single price would not be fair.

Three things shift the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind Hall Place.

That's why each call from Holt End starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it's run.

Their answers narrow a range right down to a single figure.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## In Holt End and still next to the car?

Not touching the car is, then, the most useful move you can do.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus whether it ran are all our engineers need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder across Hampshire, Holt End too.
