# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Holt Hill

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page aside for now, keep your ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your engine has not run, it is emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the car sits in Holt Hill.

Reading before the event? Then the rest covers why it happens and what to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the engine — but many modern diesels driven round Holt Hill and Bank Top hold a second liquid as well.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have both together under one flap.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Holt Hill

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Thorney Lanes, or outside the pub in the village on the way home that evening.

New-to-you cars come next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and once the tip starts, nothing stops it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Holt Hill or out in Newborough.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Bromley Wood or a forecourt around Holt Hill.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- On many vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many cars show what belongs in each filler just there.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you collect a rental or company car — from Uttoxeter's car park, perhaps — not once the light appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Staffordshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of B5234, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Both behind one flap? So confirm the cap on your diesel side is still closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Holt Hill already?

Don't start the engine: that is how the short order of things starts.

Keep the ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels it by itself starts the fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of blending — and that is where the fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at Texaco, Shell or any forecourt will normally help pushing the car away if asked.

If you're on your own driveway around Holt Hill, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Already started? Pull over once it is sensible, then turn off.

Holt Hill lies under 15 miles from the M6 Toll; there, take the next junction.

Distance matters — a short hop across Holt Hill makes a smaller job than driving under 15 miles to Lichfield — so say roughly how far it went.

## When we get there around Holt Hill, what occurs?

Outside Needwood CofE Primary School, near All Saints or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if it has run, because those replies settle this work and our price.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Then your tank is emptied and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

After the filter is cleaned — or renewed, if needed — fresh diesel is added, and finally the vehicle gets tested.

Before we leave, our engineers fire it up and confirm that it's running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we get there, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It is worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
