# Hood Hill: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, keep your ignition and engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where the vehicle sits in Hood Hill, is usually all it needs when found before your motor runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels in Warren, like those in Hood Hill, carry on two liquids; the motor gets only the diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

There is a filler for each tank.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both side by side under one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which cap to use.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hood Hill: how it takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Kirby Lane before work, or in the car park outside The Norfolk Arms heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Harley or the heart of Hood Hill: it is the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Hood Hill forecourt or a drive over in Barrow, take a few seconds on these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside the diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- The previous driver will know. Ask when you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from Chapeltown's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever across South Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush by Sheffield Road at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It works.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Skip step five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hood Hill?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

Keep your ignition off too, because on many diesels switching it on alone runs your pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the JET, ask the staff to help roll the car away from the petrol pump.

On your own drive around Hood Hill? Then the vehicle remains where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

On the M1, under a mile from Hood Hill, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Hood Hill is a smaller job than a run towards Sheffield, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when our technicians arrive in Hood Hill

By Lound Junior School, near Harley Mission Rooms or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Both the work and the price rest on three answers — which fluid, which amount, and whether it's run — so we ask.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We do not go until it has been started and is running properly.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.

Quote a postcode beginning S35 2, and the van gets there fastest.

No need to move the vehicle.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Hood Hill Plantation, a side street close to Harley Mission: our engineers drain the vehicle where it stands.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Ecclesfield Parish Council Garden of Remembrance, ring and ask instead of assuming.

## For Hood Hill people, the short version

Read the cap before you tip.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave it off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it waits, anywhere around South Yorkshire.
