# Hooker Gate: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page aside a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Around Hooker Gate, catching it before your motor turns normally leaves draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

No single liquid but two: that's how many modern diesels around Hooker Gate and Barlow carry, with diesel feeding the engine.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there spraying cleans the fumes.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for the two, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what cap to use.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hooker Gate: how it takes place

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off School Lane, perhaps at Bute Arms on the way home after work.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once started, keeps on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Hooker Gate or out in High Spen.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Hooker Gate forecourt or a drive over in Lintzford, take a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many cars show which goes in each inlet just there.

- Can't see it next to the diesel inlet? In that case look below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say where.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Wylam, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere across Tyne and Wear the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine off, and not in a rush by Spen Lane on the verge.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It works.

- Both under a single flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel side stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Hooker Gate?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, JET or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the car away if you ask.

Your own driveway in Hooker Gate is where it should stay.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Hooker Gate sits under 10 miles from the Central Motorway East; on it, take the first junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Hooker Gate is smaller a job than a trip of under 10 miles to Newcastle upon Tyne, so tell us.

## Our arrival around Hooker Gate, and what occurs next

Outside High Spen Primary School, close to St Patricks Church High Spen or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

The answers decide this work and our price, so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

No one heads out before you have had the price over the phone.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away by itself. That is why it matters more.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Next our technicians fire it up and check it runs correctly before we leave.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need roughly half an hour once we arrive.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

Shifting your car is not necessary.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to The Hop Garden CIC, a side street close to Whinfield Coking Ovens: we drain the car where it stands.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Rowlands Gill & District Community Centre.

First, the cap; after that, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in Tyne and Wear, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — so leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
