# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Horfield

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page aside a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

In Horfield, catching it before the motor turns normally means a drain and a full flush where it stands.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of newer diesels around Southmead, like those in Horfield, carry on two liquids; the motor gets just your diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

It is in the gap that the mistake happens.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen around Horfield?

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Filton Avenue, or heading home in the car park at Crafty Cow.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's a second thing: a new motor.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once started, carries on.

Whether it occurs in Lockleaze or the middle of Horfield, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Northville or a forecourt in Horfield.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- On plenty of cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Check for it.

- The handbook says which it lives if the filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver will know. Check when you pick up a hire car or company car — at Ashley Down's car park, perhaps — rather than when the warning comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere around Bristol, use this routine.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Filton Grove.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It seems daft. It works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Skip step five altogether.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Horfield?

Brief order, then. Top of it: your engine stays off.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Shell, Esso or any forecourt will usually help to push the car clear if you ask.

If you are on your own drive around Horfield, leave the car where it stands.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Horfield sits under a mile from the M32; on it, take the first junction.

A short hop across Horfield is a smaller job than a run towards Bristol, under 3 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## What takes place when our engineers arrive around Horfield

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether by Filton Avenue Primary School, beside Memorial Stadium or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask because those answers set both work and price.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, after the tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

After the filter is cleaned — or renewed, where needed — fresh diesel is added, and finally the car gets tested.

We do not go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Unrun cars mostly mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.
