# Hounslow: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the motor.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

The trouble starts once it is pulled through your lines — it will not ignite, and it will not combine with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Hounslow, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your motor has been run.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Hounslow

Do these:

- So nobody can turn the ignition on, take your keys out.

- Put the hazards on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the product and the quantity, so don't throw it out.

- Tell us a postcode starting TW3 1, or whatever street is closest, and the van finds you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Never do these:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll the car: the engine stays off.

- The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start your pump.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, so it is pointless.

- Even a short distance down Hanworth Road is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Draining that tank on your own beside the road isn't worth trying.

The staff on duty at any Hounslow filling station — the BP included — will normally help pushing it clear if you ask.

On your own driveway, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, where it cleans the fumes.

Nothing inside a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of that was meant to travel through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

A car topped up on a driveway in Whitton overnight and left unstarted is the simple case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but when the motor runs, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

Once it is sucked in, the harm comes in two forms.

What remains when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny passages and block filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it is flushed out.

By daybreak, a car sitting in Hounslow with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it's only inside the tank, it doesn't.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Esso, and the issue is thinned fuel.

No harm is done as long as it stays unused, mixed into your diesel — only once the motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, since it splits back out — and the next tankful won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the heart of Hounslow or out in Hounslow West, costs more than nearly any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Anywhere across Greater London your car has come to rest, an unrun motor means the AdBlue yet in the tank: the easiest part of a fuel system to clear.

## Hounslow: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, now and then behind one flap, and in dim light the two may look the same. Nobody intends it.

Usually it is not the filling station: someone picks up a container heading home and pours it in outside the house.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Hounslow Town Primary School the top-up is rushed.

A driver pours the bottle in at home, right off Douglas Road, as the day ends.

Otherwise, in dim light outside The Hanworth, the vehicle is refilled by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It occurs most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Same slip, same first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around Hounslow or the remainder of Greater London.

## Hounslow: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

It's been drawn through the filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Inwood Park, say, or part way across Hounslow.

When you safely can, pull over then turn everything off — without restarting to test.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Leave the M4, under 3 miles from Hounslow, by the next junction and park somewhere safe, not driving on.

Hopping across Hounslow to the car park by Hounslow United Reformed Church is one thing; driving for Westminster, under 15 miles away, is another, because each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters.

Let us know about how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where the car has stopped, and once your engine has been started there is more of it.

Very rarely does it leave lasting damage if it is noticed soon.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Hounslow

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a street beside Treaty Centre, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station around Hounslow, and our van travels to it.

Three answers decide the job, so first we ask what was put in, about the amount, plus if the engine has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together when that tank is emptied, on the spot.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is flushed right through because what remains won't wash out unaided.

Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that your car is tested.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where your engine hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Last, the system is primed with new diesel.

Then our technicians start it and you drive off, whether from a parking space outside the nearest station or a drive around Hounslow.

The test before we leave is that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

The whole job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## About Hounslow itself

Hounslow is a locality in the western part of Greater London, situated approximately 10 miles from central London. Hounslow sits near the River Thames, at a relatively low elevation of around 26 metres, and is surrounded by other localities such as Lampton and Spring Grove. Hounslow has a diverse population of around 10,671 residents, predominantly living in flats. Hounslow is also close to other nearby places, including Woodlands.

## AdBlue drains across Greater London, Hounslow included

Lampton, Woodlands and Spring Grove are among the towns around Hounslow that the same teams serve, together with much of Greater London further out, throughout the TW postcode area.

Guessing doesn't help close to a county line or anywhere tricky to pin down; ring and check.

A mobile service suits Hounslow, a small village: there's no need to bring the vehicle to us, since our technicians empty it there, in a driveway, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Hounslow

Every job is different, and so not one fixed quote would be fair.

What shifts the cost is, first of all, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Hounslow War Memorial.

That's why each call from Hounslow starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it's run.

The answers turn a range into a straight price.

Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Hounslow: still beside your car?

In that case, do nothing — that's the most helpful move there is.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Hounslow or anywhere across Greater London.
