# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Houston? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and the ignition as well.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system draws it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Houston, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before the motor has been run.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## What to do right now, Houston: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

- Pull your keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.

- Near moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.

- Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Tell us a postcode starting PA6 7, or whichever street is closest, and our van reaches you straight — so ring wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift the car: the engine stays off.

- Switching your key to ignition alone starts your pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't thin it.

- Leave the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way up Bogstonhill Road.

- By the road, do not attempt emptying it yourself.

The attendants on duty at any Houston filling station — the Morrisons among them — will usually help rolling it clear if you ask.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays just where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor.

From a dedicated tank it is fed directly to your exhaust, treating what your engine lets out.

No part in an injection pump is made for this liquid — and none of that was intended to go through one.

Tipped in with your diesel, it keeps apart instead of mixing — quite different from fuel.

Denser than diesel, it drops and collects below it — the very place the intake sucks from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Bridge of Weir overnight and has not turned since. The liquid waits at the base of the tank, undrawn — though it would be first through if the motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

Once it is pulled in, the harm comes in two forms.

What remains when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny passages and clog filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it's cleared out.

Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it till morning around Houston makes things worse. In your tank alone, time does nothing.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger problem?

Petrol put into a diesel on Tesco's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that is the main problem.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it is in the tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable substance.

Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Brookfield or the middle of Houston.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever in Renfrewshire the car has stopped.

## Houston: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles waits right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It usually happens at home, from a bottle bought en route home, not at the forecourt.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside the local primary school.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Fields Lane.

Another pattern: darkness, a pub car park by The Houston Inn, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

It takes place most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you are in Houston or the remainder of Renfrewshire, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Houston, and the engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank.

The filter and lines have had it pulled along, and any running time carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Watch for rough running, smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a stall — returning from Houston Wood, say, or part way across Houston.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check.

Every start pulls more of it through.

On the M8, under 3 miles from Houston, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

Mileage counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system, so heading towards Glasgow, under 15 miles away, makes a much bigger job than crossing Houston to the car park by Mercat Cross.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Once the engine has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop.

When it is spotted soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## Houston: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

The car remains where it is, whether that is a street near War Memorial, a drive, a layby or a filling station around Houston, and the van travels to it.

The work depends on three answers, and our technicians ask for before all else — what got in, the amount, and if the motor has turned over.

Then that tank is cleared where your car sits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue won't wash out on its own.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Roughly half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when your engine hasn't run.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Last, your system is bled with clean diesel.

Whether it is a parking bay at Bishopton or a driveway around Houston, that is where we start it and you head off.

Before we go, we make sure it's running smoothly with new diesel in.

The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage.

At the end, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

## About Houston, briefly

Houston is a village in Renfrewshire, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 38 metres, with Glasgow approximately 12 miles to the east. Houston is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its relatively affluent demographic. Houston sits within a network of nearby settlements, including Crosslee, Craigends, and Ranfurly, and is located about 351 miles northwest of London.

## AdBlue drains across Renfrewshire, Houston included

AdBlue jobs in Houston go to vans that cover the places near it — Crosslee, Craigends plus Ranfurly — and most of Renfrewshire further out, across PA postcodes.

Guessing doesn't help by a border or somewhere hard to describe; phone and check.

A van that comes to you fits Houston, a village: you have no need to bring the vehicle to us, because our engineers drain it there, on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Houston

No single figure could be honest, since each job differs.

What shifts the cost is, first of all, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Houston Village Hall.

That's why every call from Houston starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it has run.

Those replies shrink a range right down to a single figure.

You get that price by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Houston: still alongside the car?

Then, the best thing to do with the vehicle is to not touch it.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, in Houston or anywhere within Renfrewshire, once you ring 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, about what quantity, and if it ran.
