# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hove: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

Pause reading a minute when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your motor has not run, it's emptied and thoroughly flushed where the car sits in Hove.

The rest of this page covers why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels around Brighton, like those in Hove, run on two fluids; the motor gets only your diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt call-out, again and again.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which cap to use.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Hove: how it happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things lining up together.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Church Road, or heading home in the car park outside Old Albion.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and after the pour starts, no part halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Hove or out in Aldrington.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Hove forecourt or a drive over in West Blatchington, take a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere around East Sussex the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Fourth Avenue.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have found your filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Skip step five altogether.

## Hove: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start the motor: that's where the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Esso, Shell or any other — the staff will usually help roll the car away, if you ask.

Your own driveway around Hove is where it stays.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M23, under 25 miles from Hove, that means the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Hove.

## Hove: what takes place when we arrive

Our van comes to the car wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside The Juggler, or outside St Andrew's CofE (Aided) Primary School.

What liquid went in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask since the replies set the work and quote.

No one heads out before you've heard the quote over the phone.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is cleared.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and none of that clears away unaided, however long it sits.

After your filter has been flushed — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel is added, and finally the car gets tested.

Your engine is started next and checked to make sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers head off.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

## About Hove

Hove is a coastal locality in East Sussex, situated approximately 1.2 miles west of Brighton city centre. Hove sits on the south coast of England, at an elevation of around 15 metres, and is characterised by its predominantly flat housing stock. Hove is part of the larger Brighton and Hove urban area, with nearby neighbourhoods including Aldrington and Preston. Hove is also within commuting distance of London, being around 47 miles south of the capital.

## AdBlue drains in Hove and across East Sussex

Throughout BN postcodes, our vans that cover Hove — a coastal area — work the surrounding spots too, Brighton and Hove and Preston included.

A postcode starting BN3 2 gets the van to you fastest.

Moving the car isn't necessary.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Hove Town Hall, a lay-by on the way to Palmeira Square, a driveway.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Sir John Hindmarsh, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## In short, for Hove motorists

Read the cap before you tip.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it waits, anywhere around East Sussex.
