# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Howden

Stop here a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done right where the vehicle stands in Howden, is normally all it needs when found before your motor runs.

The remainder of this page covers why it happens and how to ensure it does not — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of modern diesels around Boothferry, like those in Howden, carry on two fluids; your engine gets just the diesel.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two together behind one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## Howden: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Northolmby Street before work, or in the car park at Minster View Hotel on the way home.

Unfamiliar vehicles are next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's seconds, be it in Knedlington or right in the heart of Howden.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in North Howden or a forecourt around Howden.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask when you pick up a rental or company car — from the nearest station's car park, perhaps — rather than when the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — anywhere you are around East Riding of Yorkshire — a simple routine to use.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Pinfold Street.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Howden?

Don't start your engine: that's how the short order of things begins.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the staff to help push your car clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the BP, the Shell or somewhere else.

If you're on your own drive around Howden, leave it where it stands.

When your engine has run already, pull over safely then switch the vehicle off.

The next exit is the place to come off when you're on the M62, under a mile from Howden.

A short hop across Howden is a smaller job than a run towards York, under 25 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers get there around Howden, what takes place?

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Howden Junior School, near War Memorial or on your own driveway.

Which liquid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask because those answers set both work and quote.

During the phone call itself, you are told the price — before dispatch.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

After the filter is flushed — or renewed, where required — clean diesel is added, and then your vehicle is tested.

Next our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before we go.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor hasn't run need about half an hour after our technicians are there.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
