# Huby: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page down a moment, keep the ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

In Huby, catching it before your motor turns normally means draining and a full flush on the spot.

Here before the event? In that case what follows explains how it happens and what to stop it ever happening.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel goes to your engine — but plenty of modern diesels seen around Huby and Cross Lanes hold a second fluid as well.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for both, while some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at every forecourt visit, again and again.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Huby

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Gracious Street before work, or in the car park outside The Mended Drum on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: a new vehicle.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's seconds, be it out in Sutton-on-the-Forest or right in the heart of Huby.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Marton-in-the-Forest or a forecourt in Huby, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives if the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Poppleton? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than when the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

On the day the light appears — wherever it is in North Yorkshire — a routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Main Street, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off properly.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've found the filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Step five is off limits.

## Huby: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — Gulf, another forecourt nearby or any other — the staff will normally help roll the vehicle away, if you ask.

If you're on your own driveway around Huby, leave the car where it is.

Already started? Stop when it's safe, then turn off.

On the A1(M), under 15 miles from Huby, that means the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Huby is smaller work than a run of under 10 miles towards York, and so tell us.

## Our arrival in Huby, and what takes place next

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Huby CofE Primary School, close to Huby Memorial Village Hall or on your own drive.

What fluid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: we ask since the answers decide the work and price.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a full flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

After the filter has been flushed — or renewed, where required — clean diesel goes in, and finally your car gets tested.

The motor is started next and tested to make sure it runs properly, all before our technicians leave.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run need roughly half an hour after our engineers are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

## About Huby, for a moment

Huby is a small village in North Yorkshire, situated approximately 8 miles north of York, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Huby sits in a low-lying area at an elevation of around 28 metres, near the villages of Sutton-on-the-Forest and Stillington. Huby has a population of around 841 residents and is located near the larger settlement of Moxby. Huby remains a quiet, rural community with a strong sense of local identity.

## AdBlue drains about Huby, and North Yorkshire beyond

Over YO postcodes, the vans that cover Huby — a rural village — work the surrounding locations too, Moxby and Stillington included.

Fastest of all: quote a YO61 1 postcode for our van.

The vehicle stays where it is.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Folly Wood, a side street near All Hallows: our engineers drain it where it sits.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Grey Village Hall, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## For Huby drivers, the short version

Before you pour, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same, leave the vehicle off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere across North Yorkshire.
