# Hucknall: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

The trouble begins once it's pulled through the pump — it will not burn, and it won't blend with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Hucknall, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the motor has run.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Hucknall, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

- Pull your keys out, so nobody switches your ignition on.

- Put your hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and about what quantity, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting NG15 7, or simply the name of a street nearby, so phone from the car.

Don't:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift the vehicle: the engine stays off.

- Turning the key to ignition by itself sets the pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch along High Street.

- No draining it yourself, either, on the verge.

At a forecourt around Hucknall, whether it is the Tesco or another one, ask the staff to help you push the vehicle away from the pump.

At your own drive, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, where it cleans the gas.

No part inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and none of it was meant to travel that way.

It doesn't blend. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel.

It drops, because it's denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its supply from.

A car filled on a driveway in Wighay yesterday evening and not started since is the straightforward case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once your motor turns, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

It eats at certain metals found in fuel components, attacking whatever it reaches until it's cleared from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny passages.

Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting overnight around Hucknall leaves it worse. In that tank alone, waiting costs nothing.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

An issue of thinned fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol at the Texaco.

Harm only comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting inside the tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Nor can it be thinned, because it separates back out — and the next fill will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of Hucknall or out in Linby, does more harm than nearly any other error.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Nottinghamshire the car is sitting.

## Hucknall: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of cars put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap, and in dim light the two may appear identical. No one intends it.

A container bought while driving home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual story.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Hucknall National Church of England Primary School.

In the evening, a container is tipped in on a drive near Bus Link.

Or your car is topped up in the car park outside Boatswains, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Same mistake, an identical first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you are around Hucknall or the remainder of Nottinghamshire.

## Hucknall: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

It has been sucked through your filter and your lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

You may see your engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Wigwam Lane Wood or halfway across Hucknall.

No starting it again to check: pull over once it is safe, then turn everything off.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M1, under 3 miles from Hucknall, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Hucknall to the car park by The Salvation Army is a very different job from a run towards Nottingham, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up.

Permanent damage is very unusual if it's noticed early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Hucknall?

Wherever it has come to rest in Hucknall — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a road by Under One Roof — our van travels to your car.

Three replies shape the work, and so first we ask which fluid went in, roughly what quantity, plus whether your motor has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one after that tank is emptied, right there.

A careful flush counts much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains will not clear away on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in after the filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then your car is tested.

Engine not run? Then count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Lastly, the system is primed with new diesel.

You head off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive in Hucknall or in a space at the nearest station.

Before we go, our technicians check it is running smoothly with clean diesel in.

The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Hucknall: the cost of fixing it

Because each jobs vary, a single figure wouldn't be honest.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind The Arc Cinema.

Before any quote, never after, each enquiry from Hucknall opens with three questions: the liquid, the quantity, and whether it ran.

Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
