# Humberstone Garden: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause reading a minute if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out just where the car sits in Humberstone Garden, is usually all it needs when found before the motor runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the why it occurs and the ways to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads round Humberstone Garden and Scraptoft carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Humberstone Garden: how it takes place

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and letting it run dry means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Fern Rise, perhaps outside The Humber Stone on the way home after work.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It's a few seconds, whether out in Nether Hall or right in the heart of Humberstone Garden.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Humberstone Garden or a drive out in Crown Hills. A few seconds, no more.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- Many motors give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check as you pick up a rental or company car — at Leicester's car park, perhaps — not once the warning comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere in Leicestershire, use this routine.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, engine stopped, and never rushed by Keyham Lane on the verge.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.

- Both under a single flap? So confirm the lid on the diesel filler is still shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Never go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Humberstone Garden?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Leave the ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on by itself runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — Tesco, Esso or any other — the attendants will usually help roll the car away, when you ask.

On your own drive in Humberstone Garden? Then the vehicle stays where it is.

Where the engine has been run already, pull over somewhere safe then switch the car off.

On the M1, under 10 miles from Humberstone Garden, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Humberstone Garden is a smaller job than a run towards Leicester, under 5 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Humberstone Garden: what occurs when our technicians turn up

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Kestrel Mead Primary Academy, near Hamilton Library & Learning Centre or on your own driveway.

What liquid got in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask because those answers decide the work and quote.

On the call itself, you are told our quote — before dispatch.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of that washes out unaided, however long it sits.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

After that our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs properly before we go.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our technicians get there, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
