# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hundred Acres

Stop here for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out just where your car sits in Hundred Acres, is usually all it needs when found before your engine runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

No single fluid but two: that's how many newer diesels near Hundred Acres and Wickham carry, with diesel for the engine.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to clean them, from its own tank.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Hundred Acres

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things coming up together.

On a driveway off Southwick Road before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once started, carries on.

It's seconds, be it in Mellishes Bottom or right in the heart of Hundred Acres.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Hundred Acres forecourt or a drive over in Crockerhill, take a few seconds over these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many motors mark which goes in which filler just there.

- Cannot see it next to your diesel filler? Then look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual says where.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Fareham.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

When the light comes on, wherever around Hampshire, follow this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Hundred Acres Road.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It works.

- Both under a single flap? So make sure the lid on your diesel side stays closed before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Never carry on to step five.

## Hundred Acres: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Brief list, then. Top of that: your motor remains unstarted.

Leave the ignition off as well, because on many diesels switching it on alone starts your pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Sainsbury's, ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the pump.

On your own drive in Hundred Acres? So your car remains where it is.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M27 — under 3 miles out of Hundred Acres — at the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Hundred Acres is less work than a trip of under 10 miles towards Portsmouth, and so say.

## When our engineers turn up around Hundred Acres, what happens?

The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near Boarhunt Parish Hall, or outside Wickham Church of England Primary School.

The replies determine this work and our quote, so we ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

Nobody sets off until you've had the price over the phone.

Draining your tank comes next, then a full flush of the system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it counts more.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Your engine is fired up next and tested to make sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians leave.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our technicians arrive, as long as the motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
