# Hunston: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Stop reading for a moment if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Hunston.

The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel goes to the engine — yet many newer diesels seen around Hunston and Fisher hold another liquid as well.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the gas.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place the two side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in at each filling station call-out, again and again.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think which cap it needs.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Hunston?

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Jestico's Close before work, or in the car park outside The Spotted Cow on the way home.

New-to-you cars are second, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, keeps on.

Donnington or the middle of Hunston: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Crouchers or a forecourt around Hunston, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Chichester? Check with whoever drove the car last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever in West Sussex, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Street End Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It works.

- The two under a single flap? So make sure the lid on your diesel side is still closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays off limits.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Hunston?

Don't start your motor: that's where the short order of things begins.

Leave your ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels it alone starts the fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Esso, Tesco or another forecourt will normally help pushing the car clear when you ask.

If you're on your own drive in Hunston, leave it where it is.

Where your motor has run already, stop safely then switch it off.

Hunston lies under 15 miles from the Waterlooville Bypass; there, take the first junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Chichester, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Hunston.

## Hunston: what happens when our technicians turn up

The van comes to the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Hunston Village Hall, or outside North Mundham Primary School.

Which fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask since those replies set the work and quote.

You get that price by phone, before anyone heads out.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away by itself. Hence it counts more.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Then our engineers start the engine and make sure it runs correctly before we go.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our technicians get there, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## About Hunston itself

Hunston is a small village in West Sussex, situated near the coast and close to the city of Chichester. Hunston has a low elevation of around 4 metres, and its location near the sea has influenced its development. Hunston is characterized by its terraced housing and is part of a network of nearby villages, including Donnington and North Mundham. Hunston is also within commuting distance of London, being approximately 55.7 miles away.

## Hunston and West Sussex: AdBlue drains across the area

Hunston is a coastal village, and the vans that cover it also work the towns around it, North Mundham and Stockbridge among them, across the PO postcode area.

A postcode starting PO20 1 gets the van to you fastest.

Your car remains put.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Hunston Copse, a side street close to Saint Leodegar: we drain the vehicle where it is.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of St. Stephen's? Close to a border? Checking is better than guessing, so ring.

## For Hunston motorists, the short version

Pour no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it waits, anywhere in West Sussex.
