# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Huntington: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, leave your ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out just where the vehicle stands in Huntington, is usually all it needs when found before your motor runs.

The remainder of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel feeds the engine — but plenty of modern diesels driven about Huntington and Heworth carry another fluid as well.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which cap to use.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in Huntington?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off The Old Village before work, or in the car park outside The Hogshead on the way home.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second factor: a new car.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once started, carries on.

New Earswick or the heart of Huntington: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Towthorpe or a forecourt around Huntington, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside York? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

When the light goes on, anywhere across North Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of North Moor Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Shut the cap, then check once more — making sure your diesel filler stayed closed throughout. After that, start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Huntington already?

Short order, then. First: the motor remains off.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of blending — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Sainsbury's, Asda or another — the staff will normally help roll the car clear, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Huntington.

Where your engine has run already, pull over somewhere safe and turn it off.

On the A1(M), under 15 miles from Huntington, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Huntington is a smaller job than a run towards York, under 3 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## When our technicians get there in Huntington, what happens?

Wherever the car came to rest, whether outside Huntington Primary Academy, beside Huntington Public Library or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Both the work and the price rest on three replies — what liquid, which quantity, and whether it's run — so we ask.

The price comes on the call, before any van leaves.

Draining your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before leaving, we fire it up and confirm that it is running smoothly.

Unstarted vehicles usually need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.
