# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hurdsfield: Why It Happens

Stop reading for a moment if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Hurdsfield.

Reading before the event? In that case what follows covers why it happens and what to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels in Tytherington, as well as Hurdsfield, run on two fluids; your engine gets only your diesel.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to clean them, from its own tank.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both together under one flap.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Hurdsfield

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Pleasant Street before work, or in the car park at Britannia Inn on the way home.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Third, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and once the pour starts, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Hurdsfield or out in Higher Hurdsfield.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Calrofold or a forecourt around Hurdsfield.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Macclesfield, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Cheshire that is.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Trinity Square.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.

- The two under one flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel side is still closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Hurdsfield?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting the engine.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

On a forecourt — Tesco, Esso or any other — the attendants will normally help roll your car clear, when you ask.

At home in Hurdsfield? Then your car stays put.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next exit is the place to leave when you're on the M56, under 10 miles from Hurdsfield.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Hurdsfield is smaller work than a trip of under 25 miles towards Manchester, and so tell us.

## When our engineers turn up around Hurdsfield, what happens?

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Hurdsfield Community Primary School and Nursery, near Holy Trinity Church or on your own driveway.

The answers settle this work and the price, so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run.

Nobody heads out before you've heard the quote by phone.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, after your tank is emptied.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before we leave, we fire it up and check that it's running correctly.

Unrun vehicles mostly need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Macclesfield Magistrates' Court? By a county line? Checking beats assuming, so phone.
